Tilt and Slide Patio Door Repairs
A functional tilt and slide patio door offers fresh air, light and a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors. Modern aluminium doors provide durability and strength and thermal sturdiness, and a variety of glass options to fit an array of styles.
Dirty tracks and rollers are the most common causes of problems with sliding doors. Regularly cleaning and lubricating the moving parts will keep your sliding door in good order.
Track and Roller Replacement
The track and rollers are crucial for sliding doors to function. They are located at the bottom of an aluminum door panel and are seated on a raised track which allows them to move when they open and close. Over time, dirt accumulation in the tracks can cause them become blocked. This can lead to the rollers becoming damaged. Maintaining your patio door clean and well-lubricated will help avoid these problems.
If your track isn't severely bent, it is usually possible to fix the track and rollers, without removal of the door. You can ask a relative to help you lift the panel off the track by tilting it towards you (Photo 3). It may take some effort to lift the panel as they are heavy. Once the panel has been removed, lay the panel flat on sawhorses to inspect the rollers. Replace them if damaged with a new roller set. You can also alter the height of the rollers by turning adjustment screws- typically located in slots along the edges of the door panel.
If the rollers are in good working order they may require cleaning or lubricated. Take the rollers off with a screwdriver and clean them with denatured ethanol. This will remove any caked-on dirt and grime that could be causing resistance. Then, carefully position each roller back into its slot and fully retract it using the adjustment screw. Last but not least spray the rollers using silicone spray. This type of lubricant doesn't retain dirt as petroleum-based products do and will let your door glide smoothly.
After cleaning patio door repairs and installing them, you can put the door back in place and test it to make sure the track is properly aligned with the rollers, and that the doors are sliding smoothly. If you experience any other issues, you can contact a local door dealer for assistance. Keep your doors clean and lubricated to extend their life and minimize the need for repair. We recommend a silicone lubricant because it doesn't attract dirt like WD-40. It is recommended to grease your tracks and rollers at least once per month.
Insect Screen Replacement
The sliding patio doors are a great way to maximize floor space, provide airflow, and provide stunning panoramic views. They can also pose a problem if the mechanism is not functioning properly or isn't completely. Most sliding screen door problems can be fixed easily. Dirty rollers caused by debris in the track or a wrinkled screen are common culprits but you can repair them by following these easy steps.
If your screen is looking sagging, or wrinkled, you could place a 1x4 under each end of the frame to create an unnatural bend in the middle. This will allow you to pull the screen tighter and straighten it.
Purchase a screen that is at least two inches bigger in both directions than the opening of the frame. You'll be able trim any excess. Then, use a spline roller tool to push the rubber spline's edge into the channel. Once sliding patio door repair 've completed this, it's time to insert the remainder of your spline.
Adjusting the Panel
In contrast to traditional sliding doors that open by turning the handle, tilt and slide patio door mechanisms allow you to keep the doors open to let in air and keep your children, cats or dogs out of your living space. Despite the ease of the system, the doors tend to require more force than they are expected to and, over time, this causes more friction, crooked tracks or misalignments that can cause the door to fail. Finding these issues early and making small adjustments will often solve these issues, reducing the necessity for costly replacement hardware.
The first step in adjust a tilt-and-slide patio door is to remove the panel. Place it on an even surface. After removing the panels make use of a screwdriver to remove the plastic caps that are in the holes of each adjuster. Once the plastic caps are removed, make use of a long shafted screwdriver to coax the adjuster out of its channel. After removing the roller, clean it with denatured or ruby alcohol. This will remove any grit that is creating resistance and allow the roller to slide easily into its channel after the process is completed.
When you reinstall the movable panel to be reinstalled, align it with its frame and make use of drills to drive the screws along the flange. The flange must be secured securely to the edge of the door while making sure the flaps are aligned correctly. Once the movable panel is in position, apply a blob of silicone-based lubricant onto the top track arm connector block, the lead Bogie wheel and the slave Bogie wheel, and then replace the plastic cap on the hole.
Repeat the process for the two other movable panels to restore their slide function and then put back the plastic flanges. Finally, attach the jamb side strip to its corresponding fixed panel using a plastic adhesive. Once the glue is dry reconnect the handle and check for smooth operation. If you find any issues, you can adjust the lead Bogie wheel by removing it from its channel, cleaning it and then reinstalling it using a bit of silicone-based grease.
Charley Bar Installation
A patio door can be an efficient way to let your pet in and out of your home, but it can also be an easy entry point for burglars. You can take steps to increase the security of your patio door by adding a pin lock or a charley bar. These locks provide a blend of security and convenience that is unmatched by any other product on the market.
The bar charley is a great alternative for sliding doors and can be easily installed at home. The charley bars can be placed in the middle of the door to avoid the patio door being jimmied by objects or tools like a hockey stick or Broom handle. The charley bars are constructed from polycarbonate tubes that have been molded in injection and extruded RPVC tubing, which makes them durable and strong.
The installation of the charley bar requires that you first take a measurement of the length of the bar from the edge of the track for sliding doors to the sliding patio door. Then, mark the areas where the charley bar is going to go with pencil. Use a drill bit of 8 inches to drill holes into the wall jamb and frame of the patio door Be careful not to penetrate the glass of the patio door. Finally, insert the screws provided with the charley bars and tighten them securely.
The charley bar is an excellent choice for your sliding glass patio doors as well as windows with sash. This simple security tool will keep your patio sliding doors secure and burglar-proof for many years to come. It is made of injection-molded polycarbonate that has been tested to withstand more than 400 pounds of pressure by Intertek. The charley bar is lockable using the key that comes with it.
