Lexus Key Replacement - Replacing a Remote Or Fob
If you own a traditional Lexus key that turns on the ignition, or a smart key for your car that starts with the push of one button, eventually the battery inside your key will go out. It's easy to replace it with using a paperclip. Pop the battery that is in use, insert the new one (refer to the manual for your owner to see which type of battery you need) and then secure it back in place.
Keys
Lexus keys aren't easy to replace and require a specialist locksmith for car keys to create a working spare. This is because every Lexus key contains an embedded microchip that must be programmed to sync with your vehicle's immobiliser system and if it's not, it'll not be able to start.
This process takes time and specialized equipment to complete correctly, and every model has its own programing procedure. Replacing a remote or key fob is a cost-effective service and should be left to professionals unless you possess the appropriate tools and experience.
You'll need to replace the batteries in your smart key or conventional key. Both keys function by turning the barrel of the ignition. You can save money by doing this yourself, but you'll need only a small Phillips screwdriver and the coin (a 20p piece is ideal) and a paperclip. On the front of the fob, you will see two or one screw loosen them and place them in a secure place (they're small and easily lost). Take the fob off to reveal a circular indentation for the key made of metal. Pop the battery out (using the paperclip) and then insert the new one ensuring that it's pointing the right way up. Then, clip the outside of the key back together.
Remotes
Replacing the Lexus remote or fob can be difficult and requires expert locksmiths with both the right tools and experience. Some models require that the transponder chip contained in the key be programmed to function with the car's immobiliser system. The chips are programmed using different methods based on the model of Lexus. This is done by using a specific device that sends an electrical signal to the chip that is compatible with the code used to unlock the doors and start the engine.
Some Lexus cars are equipped with a single piece of hardware that includes the key head as well as the remote, and these are much easier to replace because no separate chip is required. This type of key can also be a bit less expensive.
All fobs eventually lose their battery power, no matter the kind of key. It can be a frustrating experience, but with a little bit of knowledge you can get your Lexus up and running again. Consult the owner's guide to determine what type of battery you require. Find a replacement. Then, locate small holes in the inside of the fob and insert an item of currency (a 20p piece is ideal) and twist. There should be a flat area which you can easily remove using a paperclip.
Next, pop the old battery out and replace the new one. Make sure that you insert the battery with the correct polarity. Clip the inside of the fob together, then insert the key made of metal.
Transponder Chips
The majority of new cars since 1995 have transponder chips embedded in the head of the key to disable the immobiliser system. If you've got a car key with a chip inside, the head is covered with a plastic cover that is able to be pulled off to reveal an L-shaped key. A replacement key or fob made of a transponder chip is a multi-stage process which involves precise cutting of replacement keys as well as programming the transponder chip in order to synch up with the vehicle's immobiliser system.
Transponders are electronic device with Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) that contains a set of windings (very fine wire that is wrapped around tubes) that look like the ones in an electric motor. These windings create a coded message that the car can read. If best site is correct, the car will start.
There are two types of transponder chips, one called the 80 bit and the other referred to as a circle + (General Motors). The first kind can be reused, but has to be removed using a special machine in order to work in a different vehicle that is compatible. The latter one is more difficult since the earlier keys are usually damaged or drilled through, or thrown away when key cases are replaced. They can be salvaged however, to use with an ad-hoc key that does not require a battery to function.
Immobiliser Systems
An immobiliser is an electronic security measure that stops thieves from starting your car. It works by sending an electronic signal from your car to your key each time you attempt to start it. The electronic chip inside the key responds by transmitting a unique code that must match the one of the vehicle to allow it to start. If the codes don't match, the engine will stop immediately, and stop theft of your car.
Modern smart keys and fobs come with an embedded transponder that can store electronic security information in a format that is not easily copied. When the key or fob are inserted in the ignition, they send this code to the ECU. The ECU will then check it against the code stored in its memory and then activates the fuel system and ignition circuit if they match. If the codes don't match, your engine will not start - even if an armed robber attempts to short-circuit the ignition circuit.
Replacing a lost or damaged key is a multi-stage procedure that involves accurate cutting of the new key blade and programming it to communicate with the immobiliser system of your vehicle. There are many different immobiliser systems that are used in different years and models, and each requires an individual programming procedure. We utilize Ross-Tech software to ensure that your replacement key is programmed correctly to ensure optimal performance and security.
