Because of its isolation from the opposite Indo-Aryan tongues of mainland India, Sinhalese developed alongside impartial strains. It was influenced by Pāli, the sacred language of the Sri Lankan Buddhists, and to a lesser degree by Sanskrit.

The earliest inscriptions in Sinhalese, written on rock in Brāhmī characters, date from about 200 bc. Much literature was produced, practically all of Buddhist inspiration, from 1000 on; modern secular literature started in the twentieth century. Modern Sinhalese has its personal syllabic script. Dialects of Sinhalese are spoken in the Lakshadweep and Maldive islands.
Sinhala descended from Sanskrit, and was delivered to Sri Lanka by settlers from northern India within the 5th century B.C. The alphabet, however, with its generally rounded letters, extra intently resembles those of the Dravidian languages of southern India.
