High Court Judge Rules Against Craig Wright
In a historic judgment, a U.K. High Court judge concluded that American computer scientist Craig Wright was guilty of perjury and forgery throughout the notable COPA v. Wright trial. Justice James Mellor’s written judgment, published on Monday, discloses that Wright partook in calculated dishonesty in his assertions of being the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Judge Mellor’s evaluation determined that Wright forged documents to support his claims, using the court to perpetrate fraud. “ Nakamoto identity trial is clear that Dr. Wright engaged in the deliberate production of false documents to support false claims and use the Courts as a vehicle for fraud,” Mellor wrote. “Wright’s repeated lies to the Court are indisputable. His numerous lies and forged documents supported his grand claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto.”

Previously, in March, Mellor ruled that Wright was not Nakamoto and had nothing to do with creating Bitcoin's white paper. He commented, “Dr Wright presents himself as an extremely clever person. However, in my judgment, he is not nearly as clever as he thinks he is.”

The Legal Battle with COPA
Wright has long claimed to be the mastermind behind Bitcoin, a claim surrounded by widespread doubt and controversy. This assertion led to a legal clash with the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a major player in the cryptocurrency field. COPA initiated legal proceedings against Wright in 2021, charging him with forgery and perjury. The trial commenced on February 5 and spanned six weeks.
Wright has yet to issue a public response to Mellor’s comments, he announced on social media his plan to appeal, stating, “I fully intend to appeal the decision of the court on the matter of the identity issue.”

Consequences of the Decision
This ruling holds major implications for the cryptocurrency world, emphasizing Bitcoin's decentralized and leaderless essence and confirming that no one person can claim to have created it. The court’s decision tackles one of the most debated and publicized assertions regarding Satoshi Nakamoto's identity.
The legal consequences of Wright’s perjury are yet to be fully realized, but $7.6 million of his assets were locked in March to keep him from relocating them internationally to escape the case's expenses. Wright tried to reach an out-of-court settlement with COPA in January, but COPA rejected the proposal.
