Fraudulent Claims in COPA v. Wright Case
In a historic judgment, a British High Court judge ruled that U.S. computer expert Craig Wright engaged in perjury and document falsification throughout the notable COPA v. Wright trial. Justice James Mellor’s formal decision, published on Monday, reveals that Wright partook in calculated dishonesty regarding his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin's creator.

Craig Wright's fraudulent Bitcoin claims concluded that Wright falsified documents to support his claims, employing the court as a tool for fraud. “Wright evidently created fake documents to support false claims and use the Courts as a vehicle for fraud,” Mellor wrote. “I am fully convinced that Wright lied repeatedly to the Court. All his lies and forged documents were in support of his biggest lie: his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto.”

Mellor had previously ruled in March that Wright was not Nakamoto and had no role in writing Bitcoin’s original white paper. He remarked, “Dr Wright presents himself as an extremely clever person. However, he is not as clever as he imagines himself to be.”

The Legal Battle with COPA
Wright has long claimed to be the mastermind behind Bitcoin, a claim that has been met with much doubt and debate. This assertion led to a legal clash with the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a major player in the cryptocurrency field. COPA initiated legal proceedings against Wright in 2021, accusing him of forgery and perjury. The trial commenced on February 5 and spanned six weeks.
Wright has yet to issue a public response to Mellor’s comments, he expressed his intent to appeal the decision on social media, stating, “I completely plan to challenge the court's decision on the identity issue.”

Impact of the Judgment
This ruling carries substantial implications for the cryptocurrency industry, emphasizing Bitcoin's decentralized and leaderless essence and confirming that no one person can claim to have created it. The court’s decision confronts one of the most controversial and publicized claims about who Satoshi Nakamoto is.
The legal consequences of Wright’s perjury are yet to be fully realized, but $7.6 million of his assets were frozen in March to prevent him from moving them offshore to evade the case’s costs. Wright attempted to settle the dispute with COPA out of court in January, but COPA declined the offer.
