The Problems With 'Possums
A lot of us feel closer to nature by setting up bird feeders within our backyard. One in the problems related to bird feeders could be the unwanted guests the bird feeder may attract.

Opossums (possums), in addition to many other species appear to have a built-in GPS that knows the positioning of each bird feeder in the neighborhood. These animals then make nightly house calls to completely clean in the seeds that birds have scattered on a lawn within the bird feeder.
Although possums have more teeth (50) than some other North American animal, they usually acquiesce to raccoons, but will often fight with skunks over those discarded bird-seeds. Some of the nighttime skunk odors you smell are due to those skunk and possum confrontations.
As these nocturnal animals travel to and from the bird feeder, occasionally their route will require them along the reasons for your home. They may take a look at your air conditioning unit for a drink of water at the condensation pipe for the unit. That's when the true trouble begins.
Many air conditioners have openings inside frame where the system sits. Animals can squeeze through these openings and gain access into your crawlspace. Now they have a very safe place to reside, next to a water and source of food.
Not being house-broken, these animals deposit waste (usually along the inside foundation wall) through your house, and you might start to experience unpleasant odors filtering up into your own home. Another problem primarily related to possums are fleas.
Over time, as fleas multiply on these animals some with the fleas will begin to appear through the floor and into the house. Our company gets several phone calls on a monthly basis at home owners with flea problems who don't even own pets. Many times those fleas include the response to a possum or other animal inside crawlspace.
Now onto a few of the more unpleasant possum problems. One is odor. Possums will exude a really unpleasant green secretion sometimes of distress and it's also a significant smell to behold. Possums also have a very short lifespan. Whether it's a design flaw, bad luck or just plain lack of intelligence, possums survive average only 24 months in the wild.
