As learning model we use a random forest regressor [48] (implemented in the module RandomForestRegressor within the python library scikit-learn). Models based on decision trees are less susceptible to overfitting, considering that our training sets are relatively small (for each newspaper we only have as many samples as communes with a valid entry). We use the Gravity Model to identify how much of news coverage can be explained by the geographic factors of distance and population. For this we use the population and location of both the source of the medium and the target area.
Microsoft's news platform MSN was the only major news site among the top 50 to record year-on-year growth in the number of visits, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the biggest English language news websites in the UK. Fourth place Mail Online reached 22.5m people (45% reach), while the Independent reached 19.3m people (39% reach). Eighth-place Reach-owned Manchester Evening News was the leading local news brand (17m people - 34% reach). Despite seeing an increase in visitors, audiences spent less time with Manchester Evening News this month (115.2m minutes, down 6% month-on-month). The tabloid’s digital offering reached 16.8m people (down 13% month-on-month).
They do not find a direct relationship between the “slant” of a newspaper and the political preference of the owners (cf. our own work on the topic [17]). Instead, bias in the news is found to be more correlated to the political inclinations of the readers, showing a tendency in these news outlets to align themselves with the political preferences of their target audience and hence, maximizing selling profits. We think that this is an important result because, although outlets may seem to take a political stand in their editorial line, evidence suggests that this may be another strategy to generate revenue by targeting a specific group of people. For example, governmental offices at various levels assign a considerable part of their budgets to advertising. Newspapers sympathizers of the government policies may benefit from lucrative advertising contracts with the incumbent. Most business news and media outlets use social media to distribute stories across various networks.
We never know which GoFundMe fundraisers are going to capture the hearts of thousands. Share news coverage using social media to create an expanding circle of interest that can drive even more success for your fundraiser. Yetkin recalled how Turkey’s biggest news organizations could not even report the shocking resignation of Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak in November 2020 because they were waiting for a green-light from the government to break the news. “The outlets that were described as the mainstream in the past are now poisoned soil. Perhaps there are still a few wildflowers that manage to blossom there, but they are exceptions, as the rule is that the soil is poisoned. As others point to the dangers of being dependent on ad revenues, the local news website Manavgat Haber’s Adem Polat claimed that they are planning to overcome the problems by producing original news content and switching to a reader-first revenue model in 2021.

Tenth-place Manchester Evening News, one of Reach’s best-known regional brands, was the leading local news title (17.1m people, 34% reach). As well as commanding the biggest audience, the BBC was also the most engaged-with news brand by far.
Read about whether conservative or liberal media outlets are more widely read. A new YouGov survey of public opinion on 32 news outlets reveals which Britons consider the most trustworthy. Online journalism also leads to the spread of independent online media such as openDemocracy and the UK, Wikinews as well as allowing smaller news organizations to publish to a broad audience. Even before the Internet, technology and perhaps other factors were dividing people's attention, leading to more but narrower media outlets.
For YouTube, we manually collected some of the data, like the number of followers of the media outlets’ channels. The top video, a street interview on the victory of the main opposition candidate in Istanbul metropolitan municipality elections, was watched more than 850,000 times. The first YouTube channel we studied was Medyascope’s, which scored a rare success in video reporting and news commentary as it managed to surpass many legacy publishers in a few years as a New Media startup. One of the reasons behind Medyascope’s success may be based on the fact that it is the most prolific creator of video news and commentary as per its daily production on YouTube.

It was followed by The Sun (27.3 million visitors, 55% reach), the Mirror (25.5 million, reach of 51%), Mail Online (49% reach), The Independent (45% reach) and The Guardian (42% reach).
