As learning model we use a random forest regressor [48] (implemented in the module RandomForestRegressor within the python library scikit-learn). Models based on decision trees are less susceptible to overfitting, considering that our training sets are relatively small (for each newspaper we only have as many samples as communes with a valid entry). Microsoft's news platform MSN was the only major news site among the top 50 to record year-on-year growth in the number of visits, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the biggest English language news websites in the UK. They do not find a direct relationship between the “slant” of a newspaper and the political preference of the owners (cf. our own work on the topic [17]). Instead, bias in the news is found to be more correlated to the political inclinations of the readers, showing a tendency in these news outlets to align themselves with the political preferences of their target audience and hence, maximizing selling profits. For YouTube, we manually collected some of the data, like the number of followers of the media outlets’ channels. We also collected the data on the algorithmic recommendations of YouTube with NodeXL Pro. We limited the search to two levels with three videos per level, mapping a total of 69 videos from the studied outlets’ three most popular videos on YouTube.

The top video, a street interview on the victory of the main opposition candidate in Istanbul metropolitan municipality elections, was watched more than 850,000 times. The first YouTube channel we studied was Medyascope’s, which scored a rare success in video reporting and news commentary as it managed to surpass many legacy publishers in a few years as a New Media startup. One of the reasons behind Medyascope’s success may be based on the fact that it is the most prolific creator of video news and commentary as per its daily production on YouTube.
It is a non-political news video created by Demirören News Agency and shared on daily Hürriyet’s Facebook page, telling about an “engineering innovation” of a retired car mechanic in Istanbul. The most popular post, which received 119,053 interactions, was a tweet by the Group A outlet Cumhuriyet daily. Comparing the two groups’ total reach, Group A outlets penetrate 57.3% (33.5 million users) of Turkey’s online audience, while Group B outlets reached %81.8 (47.8 million users). As a result, we constructed the structured dataset of 84,430 entries that formed the basis of our analysis by capturing relevant data on the visibility of Turkish news outlets on Google’s search engine and Google News in November-December 2020. The last part discusses all the findings, provides analysis and actionable recommendations for the stakeholders, including donors and platforms, to support independent journalism in Turkey on the way to digital sustainability of the news ecosystem.

In this case, the advertisers’ contracts have a significant impact on the media growth or even their survival. So, outlets are forced to comply and demonstrate to the announcer how their content may serve to its needs. The audience of a newspaper becomes its product, which can then be “sold” to the sponsors. The power of the press to shape the informational landscape of a population is unparalleled, even now in the era of democratic access to all information outlets. However, it is known that news outlets (particularly more traditional ones) tend to discriminate who they want to reach, and who to leave aside.
Your company may not be ready to reach a Tier 1 audience, and a local audience in a lower tier may engage more with your company and services. Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has shut down one of the country’s few remaining independent media outlets, with human rights organisations condemning the decision as a politically-motivated attack on the free press. There is no doubt that in the past, as well as nowadays, media outlets can be driven by business. Media outlets (traditional and modern) can thrive by adding commercials, ad rates, and subscriptions.
While areas farther from the city center and mostly rural show the opposite tendency (see Fig. 1(d)). To build it, we used Poderopedia’s “influence” database [29] and Wikepedia [30] as our baseline, manually adding other news outlets in Chile. We enriched the profile of each outlet by adding relevant information such as geographic location (see Sect. 4.2), scope, Twitter account, and number of Twitter followers. For example, consistent conservatives not only trust Fox News at high rates, but also coalesce around it as a source. Fully 84% of consistent conservatives got news about government and politics from Fox News in the past week.
Half of the top ten newsbrands in the UK saw month-on-month audience growth in May. Of the four top ten newsbrands that saw a month-on-month fall in audience (BBC, Mirror, Manchester Evening News and Mail Online) none dropped by over 5%. The Telegraph website was the fastest-growing top ten newsbrand by audience size in September, according to Press Gazette’s ranking of the UK’s top 50 biggest names in news. Instead most of the top ten newsbrands saw audience falls, with three newsbrands recording double-digit month-on-month falls in audience. The Independent’s audience was down 16% to 19.4 million people, Mail Online’s audience was down 13% to 21.2 million people and Metro was down 12% to 17.4 million people.
Also, what is not reflected in this data is whether any of these media outlets are using paid media to drive engagement with their coverage. The more paid media invested would naturally drive up the engagement numbers.
