This Is The Ugly Real Truth Of Fridges
How to Keep Your Fridge Running Smoothly

Refrigerators are available in a vast array of shapes and sizes. They can be tucked away in tight spaces, including dorm rooms.

Some models also connect to smart devices. They'll let you monitor your fridge remotely and fix any issues that might arise. You can also use voice commands to manage them.

Noise

Refrigerators can produce many different sounds while operating, some of which are more obvious than others. If you hear any of the below sounds find out the cause and search for a quick fix before calling a fridge repair company.

Rattling

The fridge can rattle when there's not enough space between it and the wall or cabinet or if it's sitting at an unlevel angle. It's not difficult to repair. You just need to ensure that there is at least two inches between the fridge and the wall or cabinet, or adjust the leveling legs or screws to increase or decrease the height of your fridge.

Hissing

The compressor may hiss when cooling your food. This is a common sound that is caused by refrigerant or compressor fluid that is moving through the system. If you are concerned be aware of how often the compressor cycles. Contact a refrigerator repair service immediately in the event that this occurs more often than usual.

Squeaking

Refrigerators can be noisy if their coils or fans are filthy. If you hear a squeaking sound from your fridge, use the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner or a rag along with dish soap or water and warm water to wash the fan and coils. It is recommended to do this twice a year or more frequently when your refrigerator is old or is heavily used.

Clicking

A clicking sound can be heard from a refrigerator. It is usually due to freezing around the fan of the freezer. Manual defrosting can resolve the issue but it could recur unless a professional is called in.

Clicking can also happen when the fridge is turned off, so be sure to switch it back on when you hear this. This sound could also be caused by an Ice maker if you have one attached to the fridge, so it's crucial to ensure that it's turned off when you don't need continuous ice.

The hum of your fridge is normal, but it can be a bit louder during certain times of the day or after large stockings or intensive freezing functions. This is due to the fact that the refrigerator has to work harder and faster in order to keep your food cold, but it is not a sign of a problem with the refrigerator or its performance.

Dust

Household dust is an excellent magnet for dirt, bacteria and other microorganisms, and also traces of chemical exposures that are commonplace in the household. The tiny particles can be inhaled and trigger allergic reactions and provide a perfect environment for microbes to thrive, including some that may cause infections when they come into contact with wounds that are open.

Cleaning a refrigerator isn't easy, but regular cleaning can help reduce dust and ensure an even temperature. A fridge that is dirty uses up energy due to overheating, and is inefficient. If you suspect your fridge is making louder noises than normal, or is wasting power by overworking itself, it might be time to call the professionals.

Dust doesn't float into the air from outside as is commonly thought. It is made up of soil that has been resuspended from your home, which is often tainted with lead and other toxicants in addition to pollen, mold spores and car exhaust. It also contains the legacy pollutants like DDT which were banned more than half 100 years ago.

Some compounds, like flame retardants such as decabromodiphenylether are able to dissolve into the air. But the majority of substances found in dust originate from objects that have been knocked off, such as electronic equipment. High-molecular-weight substances, such as surfactants used in cleaners and paint strippers, also migrate directly into dust.

A dusty refrigerator can negatively impact your health, in addition to contamination of food. It can contain allergens like pet dander and the droppings of cockroaches which can trigger asthma and allergies in a lot of people. It can also contain bacterial spores, such as staphylococcus aureus, which can cause infection if they make their way into a wound.

Researchers have discovered that a wide range of health conditions are linked to contaminated dust, from cancer to cardiovascular disease to leukemia and inflammatory bowel disease. A recent study showed that the homes of children diagnosed with leukemia were more likely to have higher levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PDEs and PCBs in their dust than the homes of healthy children.

Condenser Coils

If refrigerators are functioning correctly, the coils on the front and back of the appliance should be able to dissipate the heat created by the compressor. However, when these radiator-like components are covered with dust, pet hair or lint, the compressor is forced to work overtime trying to cool the fridge, and ends up wearing down the appliance. It is important to keep your coils clean.

If you're planning to tackle the task yourself it is recommended you unplug the refrigerator and shut off the power source before beginning. This will reduce the chance of electrocuting yourself and your family members when working on the appliance. If you are allergic to dust it is a good idea for you to wear a mask for your face. Then you will have to locate the coils. These are typically at the rear of the fridge, or on the front, across the base in some units. If you are unsure where to locate them go through your fridge's owner manual or contact the manufacturer for more details.

Once fridge sale have found the coils, you will have to take off the access panel if you have one. Then, alternate between vacuuming the coils with an hose attachment that is narrow and rubbing them with a condenser coil cleaning brush. It is essential to take your time when doing this so that you don't bend or damaging the coils. After that you can replace the kick panel or push the fridge into place and plug it in.

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, you can always hire an expert. But it's much cheaper and less trouble to simply keep up with the cleaning routine to avoid the issue from arising in the first place.

Maintenance

Refrigerators are durable appliances that keep running all day and at night to cool your food. To make sure they are doing their jobs well they require regular maintenance. Simple preventive maintenance can ensure that your machines are running smoothly for a long time.

Wipe down the door seals. Jelly and other sticky foods can accumulate and block the gaskets from sealing tightly, letting cool air seep through tiny gaps. Every few months, wipe them clean with baking soda solution and warm water using the toothbrush or sponge.

The fan in the rear of the refrigerator is another spot to check. It can be noisy if it's clogged with paper, insulation or even mouse (gasp). Unplug the fridge, take out all the shelves and take out any removable parts. Clean the coils as well as the area surrounding them with an air cleaner and the hose attachment. Make sure you switch off the fridge after you have finished.

It is recommended that you read the owner's manual for information about where to locate the coils, the fan, and the cleaning tools you may need. It is also recommended to read the warranty to make sure you know what's covered.
