Robot vacuums remove pet hair, lint and dust from the floor before they settle. They also can avoid obstacles like stairs and other obstructions, including tippy furniture.

The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This includes emptying the bin (and occasionally, rinsing it) and cleaning the cameras and sensors. Additionally, they must be plugged into an electrical source. A lot of them have apps for smartphones for scheduling, adjusting settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent in a line of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is a must for every modern home. This model is equipped with a HEPA filter that can help those who are allergic. It also has an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours and returns to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

Smart mapping is a different feature that helps it identify areas in your home that require attention, and then creates a path for cleaning around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of moving around toys that have been left scattered on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from under things. It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to its real-world location if it starts to move away from its original location.

iRobot has also included a set of rollers underneath the Roomba which do not have bristles and are therefore more likely to resist knots than earlier models. They're also taller than previous rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches that are low and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across a variety of flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models of this class, though, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is a significant improvement over the previous version that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.

robot vacuum cleaner performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was very good and it scored a good score on mid pile, too. It did a fair job of picking up pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very long and thick pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best-performing robots, and it's even far from being as costly as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It has many of the features you'd expect from a flagship model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps and smart home integrations you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get working immediately. After you have removed the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery is out or it's stuffed with debris, and it has indicators on the top of the device to indicate that the bin is full, it needs to be recharged or its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
