The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent in a line of top-of the-line robot vacuums, is a must for any modern home. Additionally it has a powerful battery that can clean up to two hours, and it automatically returns to its dock when it is full.

Smart mapping is a different feature that helps it identify areas of your home that require attention and creates a path for cleaning around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of moving around toys that have been left scattered on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. It also has a camera that can snap the Roomba back to the real world when it begins to drift from its actual location.


iRobot also added the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba that don't have bristles, which makes them more likely to avoid knots than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can be tucked under low couches or beds. They're designed to make this model more movable on various floor types.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other high-end models by its new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera in order to detect dirt embedded. This is an improvement over the previous version which relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room and scrub everything three times at different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored highly on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a decent job of picking up pet hair, but it had a difficult time with extremely thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best-performing robots, and isn't even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It's got plenty of features that we'd expect to see in a top-of-the-line model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that you might find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is available for use right away. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will automatically return to docking station when it is running out of battery or is full of sand. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know the bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or if it loses Wi-Fi.
