The X8 is still a decent vacuum on floors with no dust, slinging debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with ease. The Tyres of the X8, despite their circular shape, are very efficient at grabbing edges and corners. It's not a fantastic cat litter eater, however, with our tests showing it only removes about 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that are not too large however, you aren't able to limit the amount of water it uses, which will limit its effectiveness for more severe stains. It does, however, do an admirable job of removing pet hair, with a better speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Known for quietly effective home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, beautiful design and excellent navigation. It has a few oddities in its operation that keep it from being named the best smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping system that makes use of LIDAR to map an area as well as a pair of 3D scanning cameras to detect and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). This budget robovac that looks like any other, but comes with several more features and a better performance. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2-D maps of your house and uses to navigate and stay clear of obstructions. It can even detect common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors with a bump detector and an infrared sensor that keeps the vacuum away from stairs makes it one of our most flexible vacuums.

It was able to walk over thick shag carpets and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation capabilities were impressive. Its composite score for carpet and bare flooring was higher than the competition, and it picked up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded dog hair that we tested in our lab samples.

Its controls are a bit more basic than competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top, and you can start it from the app or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set up a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, set areas that are not allowed to be cleaned, and check its cleaning history. Ion is clad in a sophisticated dark gray plastic that looks and feels beautiful in your home. The rear dust bin is accessible for emptying and removing the filter is just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic robotic vacuum that is simple and has no frills at a low cost, the Eufy11S might be your best bet. It lacks some of the more advanced features, such as digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are available in more expensive models, but if you're not looking for these features, you can save money with this model.

This robot is easy to set up and use. It doesn't require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does include the remote control that lets you select between different modes and alter the suction level. During our tests, we found that the 11S was extremely effective at getting pet fur and dirt from carpets with low pile and hard floors. Like other robots, the 11S will suck up some objects, such as cords drawstrings on hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests you keep these items off the ground and by using a cord organizer if possible. It also suggests that you clean the dustbin, change the filters, and wash or change the brushes when necessary.

6. IRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba is the flagship model of iRobot's robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's an excellent performer and arguably the most advanced robot vacuum available. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is a marvel to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than the majority of its rivals, for instance the capability to set up virtual boundary markers with its mobile application. Although its app isn't the most responsive, and the 980 does spin out a bit while crossing cables, it's still a very capable robot vacuum.

We really like the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to remember your home's floor plan. It will then use the information to create an efficient and consistent cleaning path for each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum cleaner than the majority of high-end robots.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes that grab dirt on floors and carpets, as well as a spinning brush to sweep debris into the robotic vacuum’s bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate around furniture and along edges, and Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling down the stairs. It will also return to the base station for easy charging between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as efficient as other robot vacuums, it's a sturdy and reliable machine that can keep your floors clean for hours on end.
