What Does an Engineering Consultant Do?
Whether a civil engineer designing roads and bridges, an industrial engineer improving production processes or a mechanical engineering consultant working on factory automation, engineering consultants use their skills to solve real world problems. They may specialise in a particular discipline and work across many industries or remain focused on a single industry and develop their expertise in that area. Some work for large integrated engineering firms whilst others operate as sole practitioners.

The main task of a consulting engineering firm is to provide expert consultancy and leadership in the planning, design, modification or rehabilitation of both public and private infrastructure. Many consulting engineers are self-employed and they tend to work on short term projects for different clients.

It is important for engineering consultants to have good relationships with their clients as they often receive repeat business. In addition to ensuring that they provide quality service, it is also essential for them to keep their prices competitive so that they can win the work contracts which are available.

When a contract is won the consultant will typically prepare and submit a quotation for the required services to the client company. The consultant will then be required to negotiate with the client to agree on the scope of work and terms of payment.

The consultancy's main aim is to meet the client's requirements and make sure that the project is installed on time, on budget and within scope for the contracted work.
