What is an Costume?
A costume is a set of clothes which portrays an individual from a certain moment, time period or culture. It is worn by people for film and theatre productions and is able to effectively convey a story's arc to an audience. In some instances costumes are designed from scratch, and in other instances, designers collaborate together with the actors who wear them to design designs that best depict their character on screen or stage.


To be historically accurate, a costume must be constructed from fabrics that were readily available in the period of question. A costume designer could not employ polyester satin to create a dress that is meant to resemble a 19th-century ball dress. This isn't right. Costumes that are too precise are regarded as "museum high-end" and are viewed as boring to some viewers.


Remember that costumes are intended to be dramatic. Costumes which are too realistic might bore the audience and even make them fall asleep. This is why many theatres have an on-site shop for costumes for actors to wear costumes that are historically accurate and exciting.


Costumes are an excellent way to display your uniqueness or creativity. For example, some wear costumes that are based on their favourite characters from television films or television shows. This is known as cosplay and can be an enjoyable opportunity to get together with friends or family members. A lot of people dress up in costumes to celebrate special occasions such as Halloween and Mardi Gras.


The word"costume" originates from the Latin word costuma, which translates to "custom." In ancient Rome, the custom was to dress in expensive fabrics and extravagant headdresses. During the Renaissance costumes were inspired by the latest trends in art. For example patterns on tunics were associated with popular characters from the commedia dell'arte. Likewise, pantaloons were often used to portray older men in comedy plays.



There are many ways to make a costume and the process is often difficult and creative. A well-designed costume not only captures the essence of a certain period or location, but it will also be comfortable for an actor to wear. Alongside providing the best comfort, a comfortable costume should have suitable fabrics to suit the climate and weather of the location in which it is being worn.


The most popular costumes for Halloween and other special occasions are based on television and film shows. For instance, you can dress up as the alien in the film "ET."
