Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has shut down one of the country’s few remaining independent media outlets, with human rights organisations condemning the decision as a politically-motivated attack on the free press. Six of the biggest newsbrands by audience size saw a smaller audience in August compared to the same month last year, according to data from Ipsos iris. ITV was the only top ten newsbrand by audience size to see a year-on-year audience boost in another slow month for the UK’s biggest newsbrands. Among the top ten, Metro (14.6 million, down 26% year-on-year) and The Telegraph (13.5 million, down 27%) saw the biggest drops, each shedding more than a quarter of their audiences. If motivated by a profit-driven model of the media system, this targeting may be based in socioeconomic and/or political characteristics of the intended audience, instead of only geography. According to the Gravity Model, we predict the flow of information in the news media system in terms of geography, and hence, indirectly, the proportional distribution of followers a target area will have for a given news outlet. Among consistent liberals, the radio programs of Rush Limbaugh (75% distrust), Glenn Beck (59%) and Sean Hannity (54%) round out the list of those distrusted by majorities. When it comes to getting news about government and politics, there are stark ideological differences in the sources that online Americans use, as well as in their awareness of and trust in those sources.
On the same note, Pew Research Center reported that nowadays up to 93% of U.S. adults consume some news online [25], and to do so they use official news organizations websites and social media in equal shares (36% vs. 35% respectively) [26]. Having humans deliver the news is still more effective when it comes to building trust. One recent study found that 59% of consumers preferred news content made by humans with little to no AI support. Although major media publications say they are not intentionally selling children’s data to OpenX and other brokers, these statements are largely expressions of plausible deniability rather than affirmative knowledge. Critics argue that the FTC needs to go beyond enforcing COPPA by cracking down on the sources of data that feed into the larger ecosystem.
For our list, we used Ipsos’ ranking of the top online brand groups and selected the 50 biggest which, in Press Gazette’s view, have a significant news or journalistic offering. Although some of the brands on the list of 500 such as Apple and Google are well-known names in news, given the wide reach of their other non-news content we have excluded them from our custom list. But when we stay inside a filter bubble, we may miss important ideas and perspectives.
