Emergency Mobile Alert is a new way of alerting the public about emergencies that may be happening in the UK. It works by using technology that overrides any wireless network congestion and delays, to ensure that only relevant messages reach the people who need them most - you.
Messages are delivered on technology that sends the alert to every WEA-capable mobile device in a targeted area. These messages look like text messages but have a special tone and vibration, both repeated twice, to get your attention.
WEAs (Wireless Emergency Alerts) are issued by authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial public alerting authorities, including the National Weather Service, the President of the United States and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. WEAs can be sent for imminent threats such as tornadoes, flash floods and hurricanes, or other types of severe weather, like a tsunami.
The system was designed to improve the effectiveness of emergency notifications, especially for high-risk groups such as elderly and disabled people, missing persons and the homeless. It can also help keep communities informed about school closures, campus-wide evacuations and other community-level events.
The service has been tested nationwide and is already used during a number of local and national emergencies. However, there are still a few limitations to the system and some people have concerns about it being hacked.
