How to Reduce Your Saab Key Replacement Cost
Getting your spare key copied prior to losing the previous one can save you significant cost. If you only have one key, it's generally 2X-10X as costly to make an entirely new one.
It's inexpensive, simple and simple to replace the battery in your SAAB 9-3 remote. Here's how.
Cost of Replacement Key
The SAAB 9-3 03-11 is a fantastic vehicle, but the ignition key tends to wear out. The case could become sticky and the buttons are known to fall out, and this can be a major inconvenience when driving around. This is the reason it's best to replace the key fob as soon you spot any issues. This will save you money over the long term, and is better than waiting.
You can replace the SAAB's key fob for less than $100. You'll need to buy a new key fob case that can be used with your vehicle, and an additional battery. It is necessary to open the case of the existing SAAB 9-3 key fob and then carefully remove the electronics to give you the opportunity to change the battery. After removing the electronics, you can replace the battery and synchronize your key fob with your vehicle.
SAAB keys with the remote start feature require special attention since they feature an embedded transponder chip that must be programmed to the particular vehicle. You'll need the dealer grade Tech 2 tool or its equivalent for your Saab model to do this. The tool can read the code from your existing keys and then use the information to program a new key. This process could be more complicated and will cost you up to $500 if you do not already have an extra.
It is a good idea to find an expert locksmith who is associated with Saabs. They can provide you with the key at a lower cost than the dealer. They also offer other services, such as key duplication and replacement making it possible to have a spare car key in the event yours gets damaged or lost.
Most European cars manufactured after 2000 are equipped with immobilizer systems, which rely on a microchip embedded into the key in order to begin and recognize the car. These keys are more expensive to duplicate since they have a chip. However, there are a few exceptions. VATS keys, for instance (which are mechanical, with a resistor in them) do not require programming and can be duplicated relatively cheaply. The majority of BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches manufactured after 2000 will require a dealer for key duplication. The manufacturers do not permit their dealers to join NASTF. This group makes the tools used by other auto locksmiths to make replacement keys.
Cost of a New Remote
If you own a Saab car with keys-less entry systems, it's important to have a spare key or remote. This will give you one in the event that the original key is lost or damaged. If you have insurance that covers key add-ons this can help reduce the cost of replacing a remote.
The majority of car keys made after 2000 can be programmed by a locksmith or dealer. These keys are usually locked in a small EEPROM which can only be read by a computer that was designed specifically for this purpose. This means that if you require an additional key for your vehicle you must visit the dealer. The good thing is that the dealer will charge less than the locksmith.
The Saab 9-3 is a beautiful car, and there are plenty of them still in operation across the globe today. The ignition key is the main issue in these cars. The key is very small and not a great design and is known to lose its grip or get stuck easily. In fact, many people find themselves without a functioning key after only a few years of owning their car.
Luckily, it's possible to get an additional key for your SAAB and it is done quite quickly. First, you need to remove the emergency key. It's an easy task is done by yourself and you don't need any tools. You will need to be careful, however, because if you force it too much, you might damage the electronics inside of it.
Then, you will have to locate a shop that sells an OEM replacement keycase for your SAAB. They can be difficult to find however when you know where to look, you are likely to find one fairly easily. Once replacement saab car keys have found a replacement key case, you will need to cut it and programmed to your car.
It's costly to buy a new SAAB key however, the expense is worth it. It is much cheaper and quicker than having replace the entire vehicle. If you're only left with one key that works, it's best to get it replaced as soon as you can. You don't know when you're likely to lose it, which can lead to lots of frustration and cost.
