Malcolm X was a minister, civil rights activist, and prominent Black nationalist leader. He served as a spokesman for the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and 1960s1. Due largely to his efforts, the Nation of Islam grew from a mere 400 members at the time he was released from prison in 1952 to 40,000 members by 19601. Other facts about Malcolm X include4:

Malcolm X, 39, whose surname is Little; his wife, Betty, 37, and their four daughters fled to safety at 2:35 A.M. from their blazing one-family brick and shingle house at 23-11 97th St. The house was severely damaged by a Molotov cocktail thrown through a living room window. Fragments of a second bottle bomb were found in the rear of the house.


Malcolm X's mother was Grenadian and fluent in 9 languages.
Malcolm X was in part a first generation American.
After his release from prison, he continued to visit prisoners and inmates.
Malcolm X had to sue the penal system in collaboration with the NAACP in order to do so.
Malcolm X was a feminist and often objected to orthodox rules for women in mosques.
