The buzzing in Tock's head light, and he discovered himself exterior in a forest at mid-day. "Toto, we're not in the sewer, anymore", he reported to a nearby squirrel. The squirrel, whose name seemingly was not Toto, failed to response. Before the real world could instinctively withdraw into his shell, the sound of voices arrested his attention. He craned his neck to see what was happening.

In a clearing, a scraggly group of guys seemed to be arguing with 1 guy who stood on a tree stump. At the rear of them stood the tattered remains of four or five tents that likely applied to be white. Tock crawled nearer to get a far better glimpse.

"We are completed for, I inform you. Hain't no prospect under heaven we'll make it out of right here. Let's up and consider to the forest, every person for himself!" This cry from the crowd drew a general response of cheers.

The man on the tree stump shook his head, unfortunately. "God's reality, we're in a bad place," he said. "We've received no correct foods, medicine, or thoroughly clean drinking water. For six days we have experienced no contact with our commanders, and we can ill pay for a further experience with the enemy these kinds of as we experienced yesterday." At this, the crowd murmered fearfully. "But adult men! Consider bravery! In accordance to my calculations, we may incredibly nicely find Normal Grant's forces nary a day's stroll from this spot. There was a refrain a "yeas", and the males moved apart. Tock crawled to exactly where Andrew now sprawled on your own underneath a tree. Tock mustered all his braveness, and dared to converse.
