Why Choose a Fridge Freezer Frost Free?
If you choose to go with a freezer fridge that is frost free it will remove the need to defrost, making it easier and quicker. They also hold more storage space than models that do not have this function.
Place old sheets or towels nearby to protect the area around the appliance from water drips.
There is no need to defrost.
Fridge Freezers with Total No Frost technology constantly circulate cool air through the two compartments, preventing the formation of ice on the freezer walls. This is an ideal solution for people who like to store a lot of things in the freezer, but dislike the thought of having to defrost it each year. If you do still notice an accumulation of ice, the appliance will typically undergo an automatic defrost process.
A freezer that's frost-free has the obvious benefit of not needing to defrost, which is a time-consuming and laborious process that can last up to 24 hours. A frost-free freezer can allow you to store more food items since it doesn't require space.
Another benefit of a frost free freezer is that it will have a higher energy efficiency than refrigerators that use traditional defrost systems, meaning you will reduce your electricity bills. Defrosting a refrigerator freezer is generally required when it contains an excessive amount ice. This is because ice hinders the refrigeration system's ability to cool the freezer effectively.
This is generally caused by a faulty thermostat which isn't regulating the temperature correctly. The freezer could have been shut and opened often, allowing humidity to enter the freezer. To avoid this make sure that the food is cool before putting it in the freezer or fridge. Also, ensure that all containers are securely closed.
You can also reduce the chance of having defrost your freezer in the fridge by making sure it's not over-packed. It is recommended to keep food in separate containers and use small amounts at a time rather than overfilling the freezer. This will ensure that the freezer's fan is able to move air around and is not blocked.
It is also essential to make sure that the door gasket isn't damaged, as it is the one responsible to keep room air from the freezer and fridge. If the seal is damaged this can allow warm air to enter, which can cause a condensation of frost on the coil of the evaporator. To prevent this from happening, clean the evaporator with a special spray, which will help to remove any frost that may have built up.
No more accumulation of ice
The absence of ice accumulation means that you'll need to defrost your freezer less often. If you notice frost on the outside of your freezer it could be an indication that your fridge-freezer is not functioning properly when it comes to defrosting. If a refrigerator or freezer is properly defrosted it will stop its cooling system for around 20 minutes every six hours, to ensure that the heaters behind the back wall are able to keep frost from forming on the evaporator coils, as well as the wall behind the freezer. This ensures that air can flow freely across the freezer and refrigerator, and stops food items from freezing to a tough consistency.
If your ice build-up is due to hot air getting into your freezer, you can reduce this by ensuring that the door seal isn't damaged or blocked. You should also make sure you are not overloading your freezer, or storing items in plastic bags or other containers that prevent cold air from circulating around them. Make sure your freezer isn't too close to a radiator or heater.
If you need to take out a build-up of frozen ice from your freezer it is recommended not to use a blade or other sharp instrument as it could cause damage to the appliance. Unplug the appliance and let the ice melt. Clean the inside and plug it back into the freezer.
Alternately, you can put an old towel on the floor in front of the freezer and wait for the ice to melt. Then, clean the freezer using a dry, clean cloth. Check that built in fridge freezer is correct prior to replenishing.
If you're in the market for a new fridge freezer look into one that is frost-free. It will cut down on time and effort. Contact an Abt expert if you require assistance or advice in choosing your new freezer. They'll assist you find the perfect appliance to fit your budget and lifestyle. They'll also be able to assist you with installation and any after sales issues you may face.
No more smells
The frost-free models do not affected by this problem. Contrary to conventional fridge freezers, in which bad smells may find their way into the freezer and cause food contamination however, the frost-free models do not have the same problem. The compressor circulates air to cool them. This air is cooled down to 0degC, which means it doesn't emit odours. It is important to store food items in airtight containers or wrap them in polyethylene bags, plastic-coated freezer paper, heavy duty foil or similar items to limit the amount of moisture that could escape from food into the fridge.
Despite the fact that they are frost free, these fridge freezers still require defrosting from time time. They aren't as efficient as conventional freezers. The evaporator coils in the freezer are in the back, and the heating element for defrost is used to melt the frozen ice that forms on them. If this isn't working, the frost can accumulate on the evaporator and lead to cooling issues.
If you don't have an automatic defrost device, you'll need to defrost the freezer manually regularly. The good news is this is only a couple of minutes and won't alter the flavor of your food. If you have a Frost Free model with Total No Frost technology, it won't require defrosted because it continuously circulates cool air around each compartment, preventing frozen ice from ever accumulating on the walls of the cabinet.
The odors in fridge freezers are caused by volatile chemical compounds, some of react with water while others aren't. If the smells originate from spoilage of microbial matter, then the chemicals will migrate and contaminate food in the freezer. If the odours are natural, they will remain in the fridge until they are released through the vent or are eliminated through the defrost cycle.
If you notice smells emanating from the freezer, there is probably a problem with either the seal or the cooling process. Moisture can get into the freezer of the fridge when the freezer door is opened, allowing warm air in or if food containers are packed so tightly that they block airflow through the evaporator.
Easy to clean
Fridge freezers that do not require manual defrosting are simpler to clean. When the freezer is empty, you can clean it with baking soda and water solution. Simply mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of warm water, dip the microfiber cloth in it and wipe clean all interior surfaces. You can even wipe down the seal around the door if it gets dirty. The cooling coils at the back of the fridge are easier to clean because they don't have any ice. Make sure that you don't block the tiny vents inside the freezer either, these are designed to let air circulate. Crumbs, paper and twist ties can be sucked into this area, and cause the fan to stop.
You may need to place activated charcoal in a container in your freezer to lessen or eliminate the smell. You can find this type of charcoal in the cleaning section of grocery stores.
It's a great idea to cover the floor of your freezer with old cloths or towels before you put back your frozen food. This will stop the melted ice from soaking up too much moisture. Also, make sure you clean your freezer drawers, bins and ice trays before placing them back into the freezer.
To avoid the necessity of defrosting to avoid the need to defrost, purchase a refrigerator/freezer that has Total No Frost Technology. This technology keeps the freezer at a constant 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and continuously circulates cool air, which stops ice from building up on the walls of the cabinet. It's an option that will save you a lot of time and money in the long run, plus it will keep your food fresher for longer.
Defrosting a traditional refrigerator is still necessary at least once per year or when the ice layer reaches a thickness of 1/4 inch. Make sure that the gasket on the door is sealed properly. Close the freezer onto white paper. If it is easily removed, the gasket needs to be replaced.
