What is discrimination?

Discrimination is defined as "the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex." In other words, discrimination is treating someone unfairly and in a bad way on the basis of their race, religious background, age and/or their gender.

The Mental Health Act - 2007

- It allows care professionals and relative the right to detain the patient for twenty eight days for their own safety and the safety of those around them. After the twenty eight day period, the patient is reviewec for further assessment to decide whether they can leave or not.

- Gives the definition of different types of mental disorders, allowing others to fully understand them.

- After-treatment is provided to the patient, such as counselling or therapy to help to treat mental health issues.

- It sets out the safeguards to which the person with the disorder is entitled, including right to representation/an advocate.

- Established managers' hearings, Mental Health Review Tribunals and the Mental Health Act Commission.
