How to Use Citra 77 to Remove Rust and Passivate Stainless Steel
Citra 77 is a highly effective blend of chemicals formulated for cleaning, rust removal and passivation of stainless steel products. It is supplied in trigger sprayer bottles for ease of use and has proven to be an excellent replacement for mineral spirits, thinners, Toluene and MEK/Toluene blends and chlorinated solvents. It is safe to use and environmentally friendly when used according to directions.

Ideally, the surface to be treated should be thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate cleaning solution prior to application of CitriSurf 77 Plus. The part or area to be cleaned should then be sprayed, immersed or wiped with enough of the CitriSurf 77 Plus solution to completely wet the surface, particularly in crevices and any areas where corrosion and/or rust may have occurred. The solution should be left moist for a period sufficient to remove all rust and corrosion, free iron and contaminants from the surface of the part or area to be passivated, typically 15-30 minutes at room temperature.

The surface to be passedivated should then be rinsed and wiped dry with clean cloth or paper towels. Citra77 or area should then be allowed to air dry or allowed to stand in a protected environment such as a clean container or cabinet for a few hours. Once the surface is dry, a suitable protective coating should be applied. This is usually accomplished with a chromate converter, but other protective coatings such as polyurethane and epoxy are acceptable.

Upon drying, the treated surface will be free of any rust and corrosion and will have good passivation levels. It is advisable to test the product with each type and grade of stainless steel in order to determine the appropriate treatment time and conditions. Ideally, the treated surface should be rinsed and wiped with fresh water prior to use in order to remove any residual cleaner residues.
