This little bit of the passage explains that meaning in life has to do with the connections that we have with other people and more importantly the role that we ourselves actually have in the relationship. A larger allowance or going on vacation will make you happy, but will it really contribute to a more meaningful life? Another quote I found is "Meaningfulness, in contrast, seems to have more to do with giving, effort, and sacrifice." This is clarifying the difference between a meaningful life and a happy one. It's really just explaining that meaningfulness has to do with what you do and give, rather than what is around you. Yes, eating a good diet and exercising can contribute to a more meaningful life, but are you giving time and helping someone else's life through sacrifice?
