The first theme developed in the story was freedom. Harriet Tubman believed freedom would have many opportunities in life for the slaves once they were free and disliked slavery and wanted it to end while Fredrick Douglass thought that education is important and significant and thinks that slavery is cruel and African Americans should be treated. In the autobiography of Frederick Douglass in the text it states. “All this however, was too late the first step had been taken. Mistress in teaching me the alphabet had given me the inch and no prediction could prevent me from taking the ell”. Also it states. “I was sure to be suspected of having a book and was at once called to give an account of myself. All of this however was too late. The first step had been taken. Mistress in teaching me the alphabet had given me the inch, and no prediction could prevent me from taking the ell.” In the biography of Harriet Tubman in the text it states. “She was determined to free the slaves from slavery”. Also it states. “She discovered that freedom meant more than the right to change jobs At will, more than the right to keep the money that one earned. It was the right to vote and to sit on the juries. It was the right to be elected to office”.
