Vita Toto (Movie Review)
Vita Toto (Salvatore Cascio) is a man of the world, a movie maker in Rome who returns to his Sicilian hometown for the funeral of Alfredo, his childhood projectionist. As he recounts the story of his life to the town, Toto is forced to confront the fact that his dreams for himself and his family were never realized.

As a young boy, Toto was fascinated by the little hole in the wall where the projector was housed. He asked Alfredo, the town’s titular movie palace projectionist, to teach him how it worked. Over time, the two formed a strong bond. Alfredo was a steady presence in Toto’s life, he gave him wise and practical advice and taught him the value of love.

Toto’s first love was Elena, the pretty, blue-eyed daughter of the local banker. vitatoto became romantic sweethearts, but their relationship was eventually ruined by Elena’s parents who wanted her to marry the son of their business partner. Heartbroken, and with the cajoling of Alfredo, Toto leaves Giancaldo for Rome.

After thirty years of petty bureaucracy and worry – worrying about promotions, titles, inflation that has made him poorer and his five daughters madder still – Toto is at wit’s end. He reminisces about his relationship with Elena and realizes that he was not the only one who was blinded by their passion. Upon returning to Giancaldo for Alfredo’s funeral, Toto finds that Elena left him a note in his old projection room. With tears in his eyes, Toto leaves Giancaldo with two things – the stool that he used to stand on when operating the projector and a reel of film.
