Choosing the Right SOS Device
If you plan on spending an extended time outdoors, it is imperative that you can connect with emergency response teams if necessary. No matter if it is hiking, biking, skiing, climbing, kayaking or something else; having peace of mind knowing you can send a distress signal and be located quickly during an emergency could save both lives. Therefore all outdoor enthusiasts should carry devices capable of sending satellite messages.

There are now various devices capable of doing this, from SPOT's popular SPOT brand to Garmin's InReach Mini and X series devices. While each works slightly differently, all have similar basic functionality: pairing with your smartphone for messaging services while also functioning as SOS devices in case your phone is unavailable; pressing their "SOS" buttons (remember 3 short - 3 long - 3 short) sends out your emergency status and location using visual, audio (banging it out), or flashed signals.

SOS devices feature GPS receivers to transmit your location via satellite network and help locate individuals stranded in remote areas when cellular service is not available. Many SOS devices are capable of sending voice, text and/or data messages and some even feature two-way communication features that allow emergency response teams to communicate directly with you.

Keep in mind that these devices do not replace outdoor safety knowledge or skills. In an emergency situation, always strive to devise a rescue plan within your skill level and equipment capabilities; staying within this ability level in the backcountry may also prove advantageous when traveling with others.

Finding an SOS Device
Although all SOS devices connect you with emergency services, some are more versatile than others. SOS devices that allow for sending text messages or providing additional functionality like tracking or weather updates may be considered satellite messengers or personal locator beacons; three satellite networks that offer these types of devices include GEOS, Globalstar and Iridium.

While most basic models only provide one-way SOS functions and pre-set messages that you set before leaving home (such as SPOT Gen 3), others allow two-way messaging with emergency contacts as well as tracking capabilities, social media posting, check in capabilities, and navigation features.
