انضم ليو لقائمة الأرجنتين النهائية لمونديال ألمانيا 2006 ولكن وتيرة اللعب كانت غائبة عنه عقب إصابته أمام تشيلسي التي حرمته من خوض نهائي دوري الأبطال في باريس أمام أرسنال، ولكنه لم يكن يرغب في أن يكون تواجده مع منتخب بلاده من أجل الصحبة فقط بل الإسهام في تحقيق شيء.
قبل أيام قليلة من انطلاق المونديال لعب الفريق مع منتخب الأرجنتين تحت 20 عاماً في ملعب المونومنتال وأشركه المدرب خوسيه بيكرمان لمدة نصف ساعة حيث كان يرغب في إزالة أي توتر عنه وأيضاً الوقوف على مستواه البدني.
بعد المباراة توجه ليو لنفق غرف الملابس وبدأ في البكاء ومن حوله يسألونه "هل أصبت؟ هل ألم بك شيء؟" ليظل ميسي صامتاً بعض الشيء قبل أن يبوح بما في صدره قائلاً "أنا كارثة، بهذه الطريقة لن أستطيع اللعب".. لقد كان يشعر بالأسى لأنه لم يكن في أفضل حال.
