Medications For Anxiety Disorder and Depression
Medications help many people manage anxiety, but they aren't the only solution. Exercise and psychotherapy are powerful treatments too.
Some antidepressants work to treat anxiety as well, such as SSRIs such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac) and paroxetine (Paxil) and sertraline (Zoloft). Others, like histamine blockers like Vistaril (hydroxyzine) can also help relieve anxiety.
Antidepressants
Your doctor might prescribe medication to treat depression. Antidepressants are among the most common prescription drugs and there are a variety of kinds to choose from. The type of medication your doctor prescribes is based on the severity of your symptoms as well as any other medical conditions you suffer from, as well as your the goals of your treatment.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are among the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. These drugs work by altering the way your brain's nerve cells communicate. generalized anxiety disorder do this by increasing the quantity of certain neurotransmitters, which helps improve mood and anxiety. Antidepressants may take a few weeks to produce results, so be patient and stick with your regimen.
Benzodiazepines are a different option that your doctor may recommend to treat depression and anxiety. These medications are fast-acting and can be used to reduce depression and anxiety symptoms within a short amount of time. Examples of benzodiazepines include lorazepam and alprazolam. They inhibit the action of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are hormones that participate in the fight or flight reaction.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are an antidepressant of a different type that is effective in treating depression and anxiety. They are usually prescribed to people who have not had a response to other antidepressants. They also require changes in diet in order to avoid hypertensive interactions caused by the amino acid tyramine.
Inform your doctor if are taking an antidepressant with a prescription. This includes vitamins and other supplements. You may have to decrease the dosage if other medications affect the way antidepressants work, or if they cause negative side effects. Seek help immediately if you are thinking of suicide.
You might have different symptoms of depression and anxiety, or you might have comorbid depression and anxiety. People who have comorbid depression and anxiety have a less favorable medical outlook than those who suffer from either disorder on their own. Certain psychiatric drugs have been found to be especially helpful in treating both disorders for people with comorbid anxiety and depression.
Benzodiazepines
Anxiety-related symptoms can be alleviated through benzodiazepines. These include alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin) and chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). These drugs work by affecting the benzodiazepine receptors of the central nervous system that are transmembrane protein molecules that make up a benzylchloride channel at the center. The benzodiazepine receptors have an association site for the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutryic acid type A (GABA-A). The benzodiazepines inhibit nerve activity by increasing the levels of GABA-A.
The Benzodiazepines are famous for their rapid onset, but also for their high risk of dependence and addiction. Antidepressants, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics and buspirone all have a long time to take effect, however they are the best choice for long-term use because they don't cause tolerance or create addiction.
Depression is frequently found to be comorbid with anxiety disorders, and antidepressants may aid in reducing the symptoms of depression that are a result of anxiety. However, many sufferers of depression experience a combination of depressive and anxious symptoms and require a combination of medication and therapy for talk to manage all of their symptoms.
In these instances benzodiazepines are employed for brief periods of time to manage depression and anxiety symptoms until other medications take effect. These medications are usually prescribed for a short amount of time, but not on a daily basis. These medicines should not be used for long periods of time because they can trigger withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking or trouble sleeping.
Discuss with your doctor if have ever had issues with substance abuse, dependence or mental health. Your doctor can talk about possible side effects and recommend other medications to treat your depression, if needed.
If you've never taken benzodiazepines before, or if you take them in excess they could cause serious and even fatal complications. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a history with liver disease, respiratory or digestive disorders or liver disease, your doctor may reduce the duration of treatment or recommend lower doses. Alcohol can interact with benzodiazepines and could increase the chance of developing side effects and dependence, therefore you should avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking these medications.
Beta-blockers
Beta-blockers can be utilized as an aid to manage anxiety symptoms. They are a different kind of drug than the benzodiazepines such as Xanax and work by blocking receptors that adrenaline binds. They also slow down brain and nervous system activity. They can be used in lieu of benzodiazepines, which are more addictive and have an increased risk of dependency.
Beta blockers, which lower blood pressure and slow heart rate, are commonly prescribed to treat heart problems. They can also be beneficial for treating anxiety. However, they are not specifically approved by the FDA to treat of anxiety disorder. These medications are used "off-label" to treat anxiety disorders . They are a great option if other antianxiety medications don't work or have unacceptable adverse effects. They are especially effective in cases of social and performance anxiety, where uncomfortable physical symptoms can occur during events that trigger anxiety.
They can also be employed in conjunction with other treatment modalities, such as CBT or SSRIs. They are especially useful as an adjunct therapy for people with GAD. GAD is characterized by constant and recurring worry that interferes in everyday activities. They can also assist in managing physical symptoms of anxiety such as a racing pulse or increased sweating.
Beta-blockers may help alleviate physical symptoms of anxiety, they cannot address the underlying mental issues that cause the condition. They are best used to complement other treatments like benzodiazepines and SSRIs. Before you begin taking beta-blockers it is important to talk with your doctor about your medical history as well as any other health issues.
These drugs are linked to reduced psychiatric admissions and suicidal behaviors, however the results may differ based on the specific psychiatric diagnoses and the psychiatric history of the past. In addition, they are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events in some patients.
Certain natural products have similar properties to beta-blockers, but they aren't as efficient. They include antioxidants as well as garlic, saffron and potassium. The effectiveness of these natural supplements is not yet fully realized. Some of these products may cause serious adverse side effects, so it is best to consult with a physician before taking them.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
MAOIs affect the way your brain works. They block the monoamine oxide enzyme which breaks down chemical compounds like norepinephrine, serotonin and other chemicals that help brain cells to communicate with one another. By blocking monoamine oxide, MAOIs allow more of these chemical messengers to remain in your brain. This improves brain cell communication, and improves your mood.
These medications are also effective for treating anxiety disorders. This includes anxiety, mixed depression and anxiety states. However, they are less effective in states of pure anxiety and may not help with panic attacks. The effectiveness of MAOIs has been connected to the fact that they increase levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain. These neurotransmitters, produced naturally in the body and released into bloodstreams where they are absorbed by nerve cells and function as messengers.
Iproniazid was the first antidepressant to be developed in 1950. It inhibited monoamine oxidease. This led to the development of other MAOIs, like tranylcypromine and isocarboxazid, that have long been known to help treat depression. MAOIs are usually prescribed after other types of antidepressants, such as tricyclic antidepressants or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, have been tried without success. Because they can have interactions with food and drugs and could cause serious withdrawal syndrome if stopped suddenly, MAOIs are typically only used for patients who fail to respond to other treatments.
A newer type of MAOI, called MAO-A, a selective and irreversible inhibitor, is being studied for use in treating resistant depression. It is not recommended to use in bipolar disorder because it can cause manic symptoms. Another newer MAOI, called selegiline (Eldepryl or Zelapar), is being studied to treat Parkinson's disease. It blocks monoamine oxidase, but does not affect the other enzymes that breakdown levodopa, which is the primary treatment for Parkinson's. These medications can be taken alone or in combination with other antidepressants. In some patients, the MAOIs could cause a reaction that results in increased neuromuscular excitability and hyper-reflexia. This can manifest itself as a twitching of the muscles or eyelid flickering. These reactions may be more frequent if these medications are used in conjunction in conjunction with certain foods, such as aged cheeses or cured meats.
