This Samsung FlexZone side-by-side refrigerator is an excellent option for families who would like the convenience of having a fridge and freezer in one. It's not as spacious as the top French-door models but offers many useful features. This is a great choice for those with limited space in their homes.

The Samsung Fridge Freezer is also a very energy-efficient fridge, thanks to its digital inverter technology. SmartThings

SmartThings isn't quite the same platform that Alexa and Google Assistant are but it does come with numerous smart devices that you can add. It's also baked into Samsung smartphones, tablets and TVs - plus some fridges. That may be enough to justify it for some, particularly when you own a variety of Samsung products.

The SmartThings app is well-rounded and polished, and includes an "if x then y" automation feature that performs well. You can set up things like alarms that go off when water leak sensors detect the presence of a flood, or turn on a light when your phone detects you're at home. It could even control your refrigerator, if you connect it to a smart plug however we've had mixed results with that.

SmartThings requires a hub, which is not cheap. Samsung has a range of models, including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router, and can be used as a nightlight. There's also a less expensive SmartThings Hub Dongle that can support Z-Wave and Zigbee and Thread, with Thread support in the near future.

Once you've got your smart fridge connected to your smartphone, hub and fridge it's a breeze to use. The SmartThings app lets you control your fridge from any location, with notifications sent to your phone whenever it's open or closed. You can create schedules, alter the temperature, and even set reminders.

SmartThings was a founding member in the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working towards making major home appliances from different manufacturers interoperable. That could mean you'll be able control your Samsung washer and dryer, Electrolux oven and LG television with the same app in the future.

Although it's not as widely supported as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its roster, including Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's also compatible with Matter, which allows for accessories to be paired regardless of brand. For most users, however, merged Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is most likely the best option.

Family Hub


This fridge freezer is the most modern that you can buy. It features a 21-inch touchscreen integrated into the door, as well as a host of intelligent features. Samsung's fridge is only a few years old and, although it still has a lot of functionality, its touchscreen smarts aren't something that majority of people would consider essential. These are more of a fun, semi-frivolous addition than anything else.

That might change as more software updates are made available, but for now these models are best for those looking for the most complete connected fridge that is possible. If you aren't one of those, you could pick up a cheaper model without the Family Hub to save some money. If you own a variety of smart home devices that you need to control from one screen, or you like the idea of a refrigerator equipped with a large touchscreen, it could be worth the cost.
