Types of Anxiety Disorder Medication
The use of medications can be a beneficial instrument to manage anxiety symptoms. Psychiatrists have extensive training in the use of medications and are able to formulate the right prescriptions to minimize side effects.
The typical treatment for anxiety disorders is three-pronged and consists of psychotherapy, exercise and medications. SSRIs, the first choice of medications for treating anxiety can take several weeks to be effective.
SSRIs
Most anxiety disorders are treated with SSRIs. The most recent SSRIs have more favorable adverse effects than tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). A variety of SSRIs have been approved by the FDA to treat anxiety disorders that are generalized. This includes fluoxetine (aka Prozac), paraxetine, (aka Paxil), and sertraline (aka Zoloft), as well as citalopram, (aka Celexa).
These drugs increase serotonin levels in the brain and may also aid in the increase of norepinephrine as well as BDNF. They are able to be used in combination with psychotherapy or on their own. SSRIs can cause nausea or digestive problems, but these side effects typically subside as the body gets used to the medication.
The precise mechanism behind how SSRIs are effective in treating anxiety is not understood fully. However, it is believed that they block the reuptake of serotonin from the post-synaptic neurons and increase the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic gap. This increases the amount of signals that cross the synapse and it also reduces anxiety symptoms.
In addition to decreasing anxiety, SSRIs may reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks. They also aid in the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions which often co-occur with anxiety disorders. They are often used in conjunction with psychotherapy or other forms of cognitive behavior therapy, which could increase their effectiveness.
In contrast to other classes of antidepressants, SSRIs don't appear to be addictive. Nevertheless, it is important to follow the prescriptions of your doctor exactly. If you suddenly stop taking your medication, it could result in "discontinuation" syndrome and anxiety symptoms to return.
If SSRIs are not working for you, then your doctor might suggest another class of antidepressants like nefazodone or mirtazapine. These medications are also very effective, but have greater risk of adverse reactions than the more recent SSRIs.
SSRIs may interact with certain foods such as dairy products such as eggs, red meat and some fruits and veggies. If you are taking these medications, it is a good idea to avoid these foods. It is also generally advised to avoid drinking alcohol while taking SSRIs, as this can increase some side effects.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines boost the calming effect of certain chemicals found in the nervous system and brain. They enhance the effects of a neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which suppresses the activity of nerves. These drugs are effective in treating insomnia, anxiety disorders and other psychological disorders. They can be addictive and should be used only for brief periods under medical supervision. Benzos are dangerous if taken recreationally or in combination with other substances, including alcohol.
When someone is suffering from anxiety disorders , they often look to medication as the first option. However, this is not the only option. Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, has also been shown to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorder. There are a variety of psychotherapies, however cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most popular and efficient. This type of therapy teaches you to alter your thinking and behavior so that you are less stressed.
Alprazolam and chlordiazepoxide as well as diazep, clorazepate, lorazepam and quazepam are among the most common benzodiazepines. They all share the same pharmacological properties, but each has its own distinct side effect and pharmacological profile. Clorazepate, for instance, is more effective in treating seizure disorders than other benzodiazepines. Lorazepam on the contrary, is more effective in treating anxiety disorder s when compared to Quazepam.
Benzodiazepines can be very effective, however they should not be used for long periods of time because they can cause tolerance and physical dependence. They can also cause withdrawal symptoms, like a pounding of the heart, sweating, and shaking if you abruptly stop taking them. Symptoms can be very uncomfortable and last for weeks but they can be reduced by slowly tapering off the medication.
Benzodiazepines are highly addictive and should be taken only for a limited period of time. Usually, no more than four weeks. During this time, you will need to closely monitor your heart rate and blood pressure to ensure you don't suffer a severe withdrawal reaction. If you're considering getting a prescription for benzodiazepine, consult your physician about your past history of substance abuse.
Beta-blockers
Beta-blockers are a kind of medication that can help to treat anxiety-related symptoms. They block adrenaline from binding to beta receptors in the nervous system. This stops the hormone from creating physical reactions, such as heart tremors or palpitations. These drugs are commonly used to treat high blood pressure and other conditions of the cardiovascular system, but they can also be prescribed for non-pharmacological use in cases of anxiety.
When you feel anxious your body releases a chemical known as Adrenaline. This chemical signals your body to prepare itself to fight or flee. Adrenaline binds to beta receptors in the brain and heart which causes your heart rate to increase and can trigger other physical reactions. Beta-blockers are a class of medication that treat hypertension and other heart-related conditions. They work by blocking adrenaline's binding action. This helps to lower your blood pressure and heart rate.
Unlike SSRIs and benzodiazepines, which take weeks or months to produce a noticeable improvement in your symptoms, beta-blockers work quickly. This makes them a great choice for those who require immediate relief from their anxiety symptoms like those who need to deliver speeches in public or take a plane. Additionally, they are a good choice for people who suffer from anxiety and a chronic heart condition, such as congestive heart failure or atherosclerosis.
Beta-blockers can reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety but they do not address the root causes. They are therefore only prescribed as part of an overall treatment plan that incorporates lifestyle adjustments and counseling. They are useful for people who have tried medication for anxiety but found it to be ineffective or caused unacceptable side effects.
Propranolol and atenolol as well as other beta-blockers are all available. Your doctor will determine the best one for you according to your medical history and your health. These medications can cause side effects such as fatigue or low blood pressure. It is essential to discuss treatment options with your physician.
MAOIs
Developed in the 1950s, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are effective antidepressants that can treat anxiety and depression disorders. However, they are not used as frequently as SSRIs or other antidepressants due the requirement for strict dietary restrictions and the risk of drug interactions. Some MAOIs are in tablet form and are taken orally, while others (such Emsam) are applied as a transdermal skin patch.
MAOIs block the actions of MAO and increase the amount of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain. These neurotransmitters play a role in sleep, mood appetite, sexual function. MAOIs also have anti-anxiety effects. They are more likely than TCAs or SSRIs to trigger side effects and carry warnings about suicide.
In addition to the MAOIs listed below, your doctor may prescribe additional medications or treatments that can help manage your symptoms. A beta-blocker, such as propranolol is frequently prescribed to alleviate the physical symptoms that are associated with anxiety. Your doctor may suggest a relaxation technique, or other home treatments to ease your symptoms.
The first MAOI, Iproniazid, was discovered during research into tuberculosis in 1952. It was later discovered to have mood-enhancing properties and is considered the first antidepressant medication. Typically, MAOIs are used when other antidepressants don't work, as they may cause serious adverse reactions that require immediate medical attention.
It can cause a dangerous reaction that results in high blood pressure if you are taking an MAOI while eating foods that contain tyramine. Tyramine is present in a wide variety of cheeses and red meats as well as in shellfish, fish and some dietary supplements. The symptoms of this serious reaction include a throbbing headache, nausea vomiting, and a rapid heart rate. MAOIs can also interact with other drugs and cause serious side effects, such as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
Your doctor will discuss your diet needs with you before prescribing MAOIs. He or she will advise you against eating foods that contain tyramine while you are taking the medication. They may also give you an inventory of food that are safe to eat when taking MAOIs. This food guide can help avoid MAOI-related symptoms.
