Window Repairs: A Simple Definition
Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money

Window repairs can save homeowners time and money. However, there are times when replacing old windows are more economical.

Stray baseballs and projectiles frequently cause holes or cracks in windows. With the proper tools, these are simple solutions.

If the window's frame is rotting it is recommended to replace the entire unit.

Broken or cracked glass

A bad storm or the pebbles from your lawnmowers, or the vase you put down too hard may break the glass of your windows. Fortunately just a little time and effort can prevent the cracks from getting any worse and help you avoid the cost of replacement glass.

The first step in any repair is to take off the broken pane of glass. Wearing gloves, carefully cut off any trim, molding or glazing putty that holds the glass in place. You may also need to employ a utility knife to remove any glass shards that are stuck in the frame or glazing.

After removing the glass, clean the surface and any surrounding areas thoroughly. This will stop the glue that glues the new glass in place from leaking out and causing more damage. You'll also want to ensure that the glass you're replacing is a good fit. If the glass you're replacing is larger than the prior piece, you'll need to employ a circular or mitersaw to reduce it.

Once your surface has been cleaned, you can apply a glass glue designed specifically for window glass. Install the glass back into your window sash. Be careful not to bend or move the glass during this step because it could cause the crack to get deeper.

You can also apply products like Loctite Super Glue Glass, which will fill the crack and then seal it. It's specially designed to work with all kinds of glass including tinted windows. This kind of fix will not completely hide the crack. It is not suitable for windows that can be visible from the outside.

Epoxy is another alternative. It's more time-consuming, but it offers the highest seal and makes the glass that has cracked appear almost unnoticeable. Before applying epoxy, however you'll need to wash your glass and the area around it thoroughly. Also, you'll need to be ready to address any abrupt weather changes that could cause the crack to expand once more. If you're not happy with these DIY repair techniques or if the glass you have cracked is especially large or a double-paned glass is best to get in touch with a professional to have a professional repair.

Sashes That Won't Open

A window that doesn't remain up is more than just a nuisance; it could be dangerous. Single- and double-hung windows come with balancing mechanisms that help keep the sash from sliding up and down within the jambs. However there are times when one or more mechanisms can be damaged or disconnected. Examine the pivot bar and balance shoe to determine if one or both has become dislodged. You will have to replace the pivot bar and balance shoe if they have become dislodged.

The moisture inside the window frames of the sash can cause cycles of expansion and contraction. This could cause the frame joint to become loose over time and then become stuck. You might be able to repair this without dismantling the window by putting a knife around the frame's joints and then prying them open. If window seal repair appears swollen, this is often caused by missing flashing on the exterior of your home that allows water to soak the frame.

A sash cable that has snapped is another reason that can cause windows not opening. You can try to reattach the cord using pliers and by sliding the sash into its normal position. If the cord snapped completely, you will have to replace it.

Paint can also make windows difficult to move. If you find that the sash channel of double-hung windows has been painted shut and you want to break the bond by scoring the paint using a utility knife and trying to move it. If this fails then you'll need to take out the window sash, and then cut the seam on both sides between the sash, stop or parting strip, or jamb (Photo 1).

Sash shoes for single-hung windows may be made of plastic or metal. These shoes have an U shaped slot that locks when the shoe is in its normal position inside the sash. To unlock the shoe with a screwdriver and turn the slot to the side by following the image 2. Then you can move the sash up and down, and then check whether the window functions normally.

Rotting Wood

Wood rot isn't just unsightly; it can also cause serious harm to the structural integrity in the space it has infested. The fungus that causes it feeds on moisture and turns wooden beams, walls and joists into a sloppy mush. The best way to prevent decay is to ensure your home is maintained and that areas that have exposure to the elements are adequately protected. Even if you are vigilant the slightest lapse in painting, clogged rain gutter, or minor roof leak can expose windows, porch columns, and other components of the home to decaying organisms.

Most wood rots are caused by excessive moisture, which is often caused by rainwater seepage or condensation. This can occur when damp proofing isn't installed or damaged, or when internal materials like plaster and drywall are impacted by leaky pipes, appliances and fixtures.

The first step in repairing decay is to remove the old material. It is usually easy using a pry bar but using a combination of hammer as well as chisel may be necessary for the most difficult spots. Once the rotten wood is removed, the gap needs to be caulked and filled. There are many wood fillers available and the most effective one will depend on the amount of work you'd like to accomplish, how deep the hole is and how much of the original frame can be saved.

If the rot is just too deep for a simple filler then you'll need to replace the damaged area. You can hire a professional to do this or do it yourself. This is a more complicated project, however, and requires good carpentry skills to get the job done correctly. If you aren't sure about your DIY abilities it is recommended to seek out an expert.

While repairing rotting wood is always an option however, it's much more effective (and more affordable) to stop it from happening in the beginning. Preventative measures can include sealing the cracks around windows, scraping the caulk off and repainting it, as well as installing drip edges on the roof. You should also look for signs of excessive humidity around your window and think about installing a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels under control.

Dirty Seals

The most obvious sign of shrinking window seals is the water that drips around or beneath a window. Sometimes, it is easy to detect, but often it is hidden in a wall and is harder to locate. This can cause soft wood, mold, or even structural damage to your RV. The best method to guard your windows is to perform regular inspection and cleaning. By gently pressing against the trim of the seal and visually inspecting can help you find soft spots before they cause water damage.

The windows that are stained with fog can be a sign of a failing seal. While they are unlikely to cause structural damage or increase your electricity bill, they can detract from the appearance of your RV.

Failing window seals are largely caused by weather damage, with the seals swelling in hot temperatures and shrinking in colder temperatures. You can minimize this effect by keeping your camper away from direct sunlight and storing it in a covers whenever you can. A simple car wash will assist in preventing the salt from causing damage to your window rubber seals.

Other factors that can cause window seal failure include cleaning the seals with brushes or washrags that contain cleaning chemicals which break down the rubber. Seals can become brittle, and more susceptible to cracking. Avoid using harsh cleaners and keep your window seals and sash tracks clean with a dry toothbrush.

Doing these maintenance routines is the cheapest and easiest method of protecting the windows of your RV. This also gives you the opportunity to examine the seals on your windows and make any required repairs.

Having your window seals lubricated with 303 Protectant Spray or replaced is a more expensive repair than simply resealing the sash, however it is still significantly cheaper than repairing the water damage that is caused by failed seals. This is a straightforward DIY project that will extend the lifespan of your windows in your RV and save you money.
