The Advantages of 22-250 Ammo
When it comes to small-bore centerfire cartridges, the 22-250 has a lot going for it. It's got longevity, flexibility and plenty of velocity. It's a cartridge that's gotten better with age, too, thanks to advances in smokeless powder technology. So if you're looking for a versatile, high-velocity option for hunting and plinking, the 22-250 might be right up your alley.

The 22-250 was standardized by Remington in 1965 after spending most of its formative years as a wildcat. It had a variety of names including the.22 Varminter and the.22 Wotkyns, and its origin is a bit of a mystery. What isn't a mystery, however, is that the 22-250 was a potent little beast once it hit the mainstream.

It pushed bullets to over 4000 fps, which was faster than any commercially available cartridge at the time. It was also the best-balanced of all the high-velocity varmint cartridges, with enough power to take a deer at close range yet capable of handling long shots when necessary.

In addition, it was easy to work up a good load with almost any powder and any bullet weight. The cartridge was a little more touchy than others like the rimmed.224 Weatherby but not nearly as temperamental. It was the perfect round for handloaders to customize, as well.

Despite all that, it took some time before any rifle-makers began chambering for the 22-250. One of the main reasons was that it existed in so many minor variations under different names. This not only caused a logistical nightmare for hunters who wanted to use the cartridge in more than one rifle but it could also cause legal problems for those who built their own guns and loaded their own ammunition.

Today, most major rifle makers offer bolt-action rifles in the 22-250 chambering. You'll also find a wide variety of ammunition at most big online retailers. For instance, Federal offers 11 options and Midway USA has 36 if you do a quick search.

It's tough to put a finger on exactly why the 22-250 is such a popular cartridge. Maybe it's the versatility--it can handle both varmints and whitetail, depending on the bullet chosen--or maybe it's the fact that it has a reasonable barrel life (depending on the quality of the rifle, of course). But there is no doubt that it is the most popular of all the high-velocity.22 varmint cartridges and it's also the most popular choice for shooting benchrest.

The.223 may be faster than the 22-250, but the latter is still a great cartridge for both varmints and whitetail. If you're a hunter that doesn't mind shooting lots of rounds, either way, the.22-250 will get the job done without beating up your shoulder or your wallet.
