ADHD Treatments For Adults

Many of the same treatments that work for children with ADHD are also effective for adults. These treatments include counseling, medication (psychotherapy), and life skills training. They can also involve a combination of these therapies.

Stimulant Medications


These medications work by increasing the amount of certain brain chemicals that aid in controlling self-regulation and attention. This is known by the brand name Adderall and Vyvanse.

Stimulant Medicines

Stimulants boost the body's metabolism and can cause an increase in mental alertness and physical activity. These include legal substances like caffeine (added to tea and coffee) and nicotine, and prescription medicines that treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), narcolepsy and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants can result in over-stimulation and cause anxiety and heart palpitations, as well as high blood pressure, paranoia and aggression. Long-term use of stimulants can cause the dopamine system in the brain to malfunction, reducing feelings of happiness. Stimulants are available in pills, liquids, or patches that go on the skin. Cocaine, methamphetamines and amphetamines are stimulants which can be purchased illegally and used to abuse.

The medications in this class are called central nervous system (CNS) stimulants and work by increasing the quantity of certain chemicals in the brain that boost concentration, reduce fatigue, and improve alertness. They are the first line of treatment for adults with ADD or ADHD. The medications are available in the form of a morning-only formulation or a longer-acting formulation that remains active throughout the day, like the methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine.

The health care team might also recommend psychosocial interventions, such as psychotherapy, education or coaching. It is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of medicines over time. This is challenging.

Non-stimulant Medications

Around 15%-30% of children don't respond to stimulant drugs and it's likely that this is the case for adults too. Non-stimulant drugs take longer to kick in and can take up to several weeks to feel any effects. But, they don't come with the same risk of adverse effects as stimulants, and could be a better option for those who are unable to tolerate the effects of stimulants or are worried about addiction.
