Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot
Slots work exactly the same way every spin, so you won't find any secret hacks to beat them. However there are some things you can keep in mind to maximize your winning potential.
Take a look at the RTP of a game first. This statistic shows how much players can anticipate winning in the long run.
Slot Efficiency
Slot efficiency is the goal of increasing the number of slot switches that can be made while not violating a set of predefined constraints. These constraints can include, for instance the minimal operational delay (usually expressed as scheduling delays) fairness, equity access, competition, environmental goals and more. The slot allocation process is a complex one and optimizing it to reach the desired performance metrics requires careful analysis of all the factors involved.
The process starts by identifying the different types of requests to prioritize in accordance with the past experience. Once the type of request is determined and a slot allocation model is utilized to minimize the required delay the criterion. However, there are many research gaps have been discovered regarding the optimization of slot scheduling models especially when trying to balance fairness and efficiency.
A common method for prioritizing slot assignments is the ABC (assigned by velocity) strategy, which collects information on the history of an item and creates a velocity group. Items with the highest velocity are given the most slots, while smaller velocity items are placed farther back in the warehouse.
Another crucial aspect of slot efficiency is the distance factor, which determines the amount of space that must be allocated to support the pick-to-ship process. The calculation takes into consideration the velocity group of items, as along with their rack placements and handling characteristics of the equipment.
To increase the efficiency of a slot It is also crucial to think about the costs associated with any slot change. Managers can estimate the cost of a typical change to a slot and the impact it has on other aspects of slot efficiency such as speed by studying a typical slot.
After one or two months proving the data and re-dating recommendations, the casino started using the solution more regularly. The gaming operations team estimates that they can save between 10-12 hours a month on their usual analysis. This does not include the time spent reviewing the data of customers or creating a new actionable strategy.
The team was able, using the new recommendations provided by SRE to make a number of game changes that increased the revenue of players. In particular, Dancing Drums Explosion and Twinstar Wave XL both from Scientific Games, saw big increases in the premium lease and WAP rankings. The casino was also able to shift their budget from marketing and other expenses to enhancing floor performance.
Perimeter Efficiency
We all know that wide receivers are more likely to score more touchdowns on areas that are not targeted by slot targets, as they're often targeted farther downfield and often have one-on-one coverage. What might be surprising to people is the different between the top five slot receivers and the rest of them in terms of scoring on those perimeter targets.
Of the wide receivers who have had at least 40 targets in the past two seasons, the top five slot scorers on perimeter routes were all speed receivers: Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett and Michael Gallup. The bottom half of this list is filled with receivers who are more possession-based, such as Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnston. The latter two are likely to see an increase in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more often however they'll need to improve their perimeter scoring to maintain their high standards.
The slot is the best option for wide receivers who are fast, as they are able to open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.
Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the bottom of the list. They're more effective on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. Jeudy is a great sleeper pick this year, as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to excel on intermediate and short-to middle routes, since that's what he did well in 2021 when he played for the Bills. He could be an excellent replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps in the Slot
The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It's not always an accurate reflection of a receiver’s skill set because certain receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play further.
Alshon Jeffrey, as an example leads the league in goals per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets come from the outside and it is difficult to gain a first down in a wide-open deep line in this setting.
On the other hand, certain receivers excel inside and aren't able to do much on the outer. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.
Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are typically more effective when lined up inside, since they are able to get targeted down the field and frequently are in one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.
McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore has the best tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Through using Rainbet in the slot when they are running nickel or dime-type packages, and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a major asset when playing the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers with a high slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.
This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players listed on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he also plays the X position, and makes some big plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list but he's highly skilled and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys' scheme.
Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both types of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, making him a valuable part of his team's defense. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is the result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who can't match up with Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
