ADHD Treatments For Adults
Many of the same treatments that are effective for children with ADHD also treat adults. These treatments include counseling, medication (psychotherapy) as well as life skills training. They may also involve a combination of these therapies.
Stimulant Medicines
These medications work by increasing brain chemicals that control self-regulation and attention. They include methylphenidate, which is available under the brand names Ritalin and Concerta as well as stimulants belonging to the amphetamine family such as lisdexamphetamine, which is marketed under the brand name Adderall and Vyvanse.
add treatment for adults boost the body's metabolism and can cause increased mental alertness and physical activity. These include legal substances like caffeine (added to coffee and tea) and nicotine, and prescription drugs that treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) as well as narcolepsy and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants can create over-stimulation, which can cause anxiety heart palpitations, high blood pressure as well as paranoia and aggression. Long-term use of stimulants can cause the dopamine system in the brain to malfunction and decrease feelings of pleasure. The stimulants are available in pills, liquids or patches. Illegally obtained and abused stimulants include methamphetamines, cocaine and amphetamines.
They are also known as central nervous system stimulants. They work by boosting certain brain chemicals that boost concentration, decrease fatigue, and boost alertness. They are the first line of treatment for adults suffering from ADD or ADHD. These medicines can be a short-acting formula that is taken in the morning, or a longer-acting medicine that stays active in the body for most of the day, such as lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin).
The health care team can also recommend psychosocial interventions, such as psychotherapy or educational. It is important to monitor the effectiveness of medications over time. This is an extremely difficult task.
Non-stimulant medications
About 15%-30% of kids don't respond to stimulant medications and it's possible that this is true for adults as well. Non-stimulant medications are slower to begin working, and may take some time before you begin to notice the effects. They don't have the same adverse effects, and are a better choice for those who are unable to tolerate stimulants or fear addiction.
