How to Treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder
There are a variety of reasons to be worried. But people with GAD suffer from an ongoing anxiety that impacts their school, work and relationships.
GAD can be caused by trauma, genetics or chronic medical conditions. Treatment options include medication and psychotherapy.
Medicines
There are a variety of medications used to treat GAD and it's recommended to consult your physician about the advantages and side effects of these drugs. Generally, the first medications that are tried for anxiety disorders are antidepressants in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) classes. These medications can help reduce anxiety, and also help with depression or other mental health issues. These drugs are typically used for a brief period of time and are typically used in conjunction with psychotherapy.
SSRIs are effective in blocking presynaptic serotonin transporters so that serotonin is available for release. SNRIs block the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine in order to increase the availability of neurotransmitters. Both have been shown to be effective in treating anxiety disorders, such as GAD. They are typically the first-line treatment for psychiatric disorders such as panic disorder and major depression (MDD). The medications include escitalopram (also called citalopram) as well as sertraline (also known as sertraline), fluoxetine, duloxetine and venlafaxine. In addition, agomelatine, a melatonin-1/melatonin-2 agonist and 5-HT2C receptor antagonist, has been found to be efficacious in treating anxiety disorders, although it is more commonly used for the treatment of depression.
It is important to keep in mind that many people with anxiety disorders aren't responding to the first medication treatment. It could take between four and six weeks before symptoms begin to improve, which is why it's important to stick to your treatment program. Do not use herbal remedies or supplements as a method of treating anxiety because they could interfere with your medication.
In a recent meta-analysis of networks and systematic review of randomized studies, CBT showed both acute and long-term effectiveness as well as acceptability in treating generalized anxiety disorder in adults. CBT treatments like cue-controlling, alternative self-statements and relaxation training were all found to be efficient. Other psychotherapies were also found to be effective, such as schema therapy and interpersonal therapy.
