Do Not Make This Blunder On Your Window Repairs
Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money

Window repairs can save homeowners time and money. However, there are times when replacing windows that are old is more economical.

Projectiles and baseballs that are thrown often cause cracks or holes in windows. These are usually simple fixable using the correct tools.

If the frame of the unit is rotten It is recommended to replace the whole unit.

Broken or Cracked Glass

A storm that is severe or the sand from your lawnmowers, or the vase you place down too hard could crack the glass of your windows. Fortunately just a little time and effort can prevent these cracks from becoming worse and reduce the expense of replacing glass.

The first step in any repair is to take off the glass pane that has broken. Wearing gloves, carefully remove any trim, molding or glazing putty that holds the glass in the frame. You may need to use a utility knife to remove any glass fragments that are stuck to the frame.

After removing the glass clean the surface and any surrounding areas thoroughly. This will stop the adhesive used to hold the glass to the surface from leaking out and causing more damage. Make sure that the new glass fits well. If the new piece is larger than the old one, you'll need cut it down with circular saws or a miter saw.

Once your surface has been cleaned and dried, you can apply a glass adhesive made specifically for windows. Then, reinstall the glass in your window sash. Be careful not to bend the glass or moving it during this process. This could cause cracks to become deeper.

You can also use a product such as Loctite Super Glue Glass, which will fill in the crack and seal it. It's formulated to work with all kinds of glass including tinted windows. Just be aware that this kind of fix will not completely cover the crack, so it's not a suitable option for windows that are easily visible from the outside.

Epoxy is a different option. It is more time-consuming, but it provides the best seal and makes the glass that has cracked appear almost unnoticeable. Before applying epoxy, however you'll need to wash your glass and the area around it thoroughly. You will also need to be prepared for any sudden weather changes that can cause cracks to expand. If you're not sure using these DIY techniques or if your damaged glass is large or a two-paned, it is recommended to consult a professional.

Sashes that won't open

A window that doesn't remain up is more than an inconvenience and could be a risk. Double-hung and single-hung windows have balancing mechanisms to prevent the sash from moving up and down within the jambs. However the mechanism may be damaged or removed. Check the balance and pivot bar shoe to determine if one or both have been dislodged. You'll need to replace the pivot bar and balance shoe if they've been dislodged.

Moisture can trigger cycles of expansion and contraction in the frames of sash windows made of timber. As time passes, this can weaken the joints of the frame and cause them to stick. It is possible to fix this issue without removing the window if you use a utility knife to cut the joints of the frame apart. If your wood appears swollen it's usually due to a lack of flashing on the exterior of your home that allows water to enter the frame.

A sash cable that has snapped is another common cause of a window not opening. You can try to re-attach the cord by pulling on the cord (pliers may be helpful) and then slid the sash back into its normal position. If the cord snapped completely, you'll need to replace it.

Paint can also make a window difficult to move. If you find that the sash channel of a double-hung window is painted shut and you want to break the bond by scoring the paint using a utility knife and trying to move it. If this doesn't work, you'll need to remove the window sash, and then cut the seam on both sides between the sash, stop, the parting strip, or jamb (Photo 1).

The sash shoes in single-hung windows are usually made from plastic or metal. double glazing repairs come with a U-shaped slot them that is locked when the shoe is in its normal place in the sash. To unlock the shoe, you need a screwdriver to turn the slot so that it is facing sideways (Photo 2). Then you can slide the sash up and down again and see whether the window is functioning normally.

Rotting Wood

Wood rot isn't just unsightly; it can also pose a serious threat to the structural integrity of the space it has invaded. The fungus responsible feeds on moisture and turns wooden beams, walls, and joists into a sloppy mush. To stop the rot from occurring you must ensure that your home is maintained and the areas that are exposed to the elements are well protected. Even if you're diligent any missed painting session, clogged rain gutter, or a minor roof leak can expose windows, porch columns, and other areas of the home to decaying organisms.

The majority of wood rot is the result of excessive moisture content, which could be caused by rainwater seepage, condensation or rising dampness. The latter can happen when damp proofing courses aren't installed or is damaged, or when internal materials like plaster and drywall are impacted by leaky pipes, appliances and fixtures.

The first step to repair the rot is to take off the old material. This is typically done with a pry bar, although using a combination of hammer as well as chisel is sometimes needed for the most difficult areas. After the decayed wood has been removed, the hole needs to be caulked and filled. There are many types of wood fillers. The most suitable one will depend on how much work you'd like to do and how deep the hole.

If the rot has gotten too far for a filler perform, you will need to replace the damaged component. This can be done by hiring a professional, or doing it yourself. This is a more difficult project that requires carpentry expertise to complete. If you're not sure of your DIY ability here, then it's best to call in an expert.

While repairing wood that is rotting is a possibility but it's much easier (and more affordable) to prevent it in the first place. Preventative measures include regularly sealing cracks around windows, scraping and repainting caulk as well as installing drip edges on the roof to stop water from splattering onto exterior trim. Also, you should look for signs of an excessive amount of humidity around your window and think about using a dehumidifier in order to keep moisture levels in check.

Dirty Seals

Probably the most obvious sign of shrinking window seals is water that drips around or beneath the window. It's easy to see, but it's often hidden behind walls. This can result in soft wood, mold, or even structural damage to your RV. The best way to safeguard your windows is to perform regular cleaning and inspection checks. You can identify soft spots by gently pressing on the seal trim while inspecting.

Fogged windows can also be a sign of a failing seal. They may not be structurally harmful or cause your electric bills to rise, but they affect the appearance of your RV.

The failure of window seals is largely caused by weather damage as the seals expand in hot temperatures, and shrinking in colder ones. This issue can be cured by storing your camper underneath cover and keeping it out of direct sunlight. A simple car wash can help keep the salt from causing damage to the rubber seals that are on your windows.

Other factors that contribute to window seal failure include scratching the seals using brushes and washrags that contain cleaning agents that break down the rubber. Seals can become brittle and more susceptible to cracking. The best way to prevent this is to avoid using harsh window cleaners and to keep the sash tracks and window seals clean using a dry brush.

Performing these routine maintenance tasks is the cheapest and easiest way to protect the windows of your RV. It also gives you the opportunity to check the condition of your window seals and make repairs that can prevent costly future problems.

Lubricating your window seals with 303 Protectant Spray or replaced is a much more costly fix than simply resealing your sash, but it's still significantly cheaper than repairing the water damage caused by failed seals. If you're willing to commit a few hours of work it is a DIY project that can extend the life of your RV's windows, and save you money in the long term.
