Seat Key: It's Not As Difficult As You Think
Why a Seat Ibiza Replacement Key Won't Work

Take off the battery compartment cover on the key fob (A). Using a thumb nail or flat-head screwdriver, pull upwards to open the cover and replace the CR2025 battery.

If your key fob isn't working and you are unable to reprogram it the most likely cause is the battery is dead. Replacing this should make it functional again - you can do it yourself in under 10 minutes.


Open the key first by removing the metal rings. It is possible to open the clip-on cover using your nail. The old battery can be pushed out through the hole in the middle. Be aware that if you replace the battery in a wrong way, or using a battery that's not suitable, it can cause damage to the remote. Always replace the battery with one that is the same voltage, size and specification as the original.

If your key fob was submerged in water it may be necessary to clean the chip prior to replacing the battery. This is particularly crucial if you've dropped it in the sea or soapy washing water. This should be done immediately, as exposure to water can harm the chip's electronic circuit and cause the key fob's functionality to cease.

Worn Buttons

The most common reason the Seat Ibiza replacement key fails to function is because the battery for the coin being dead. It's a simple fix that takes just few minutes. The key fob may stop working if the buttons are worn. It's simple to fix and only requires you to replace the key shell that was used to replace it with an updated one.

It's important to note that the battery for the button should be replaced properly or damage may occur to the key fob. It is recommended that you always utilize a brand new battery that is the same size, voltage, and specifications. It's also important to ensure that the side of the new battery is towards the upwards.

The key fob is protected by rubber seals, which will keep water out. However submerging the key fob in water can cause the seals to break and cause damage to the electronic chip inside. This is usually the case if you accidentally drop your key fob into the pool or leave it in the rain. If your key fob does not work after replacing it or reprogramming, the receiver module may be faulty.

Water Damage

The rubber seals on the key fob block water from reaching the chip. However it's not enough to stop the occasional bath or splash. If you've survived a washing cycle or an ocean dip your chip might be damaged.

You can fix this issue by taking the battery off and cleaning the chip using isopropyl ethanol or electronic cleaner. Dry it completely and then put it back. If the chip is fried it will have to be replaced with a brand new one.

If your key fob doesn't work despite changing the battery or programming, it could be an issue with the receiver module. This is the part of the car that receives signals from the key fob, and then sends them to the key ignition system. If you have an extra key fob, you can test it. The central locking should start to work and the ignition system light should turn on. If this doesn't occur then the receiver module may be faulty. This is a costly fix but it can be done by a professional at your local garage.

Radio Interference

If the fob's electronic chip was submerged in soapy or salty water or sat for a long time on a wet surface it is almost certain to be damaged and will need to be replaced.

To change the battery, use a small screwdriver with a flat head or a fingernail to pry open the compartment for button cell batteries (B). Remove the old battery, and replace it with a new CR2025 battery, making sure that the '+' polarity is facing upwards.
