Ignition Cylinder Lock Repair
The ignition lock in the cylinder is responsible for allowing the key to turn and start the vehicle. It is controlled by a chamber that has springs that can be damaged due to environmental factors such as high or low temperatures.
If your ignition switch keys or the switch itself won't turn it could mean that the lock's cylinder needs to be replaced. This task should be left to an auto locksmith professional.
Remove the Steering Column Covers
Ignition lock cylinders are the mechanical components that allow keys to be put into the ignition switch and turned in order to start the vehicle. They can fail and wear out due to various reasons, including if the key is inserted too forcefully or in the wrong place. They may also fail due to corrosion, and other causes. It's time to replace your ignition cylinder if it's not working. This is a simple job but you'll have to remove the cover of the steering column and airbag cover. The process is dangerous and can be difficult. It could also require specialized tools for the replacement cylinder.
The ignition cylinder is situated in the middle of the column where the steering wheel is attached. The clip and two screws on the bottom of the cylinder hold it in the right position. It is important to remove these screws before you begin working on the cylinder so it doesn't break and disappear.
Once ignition lock cylinder replacement cost are removed, you can remove the plastic retainers on the bottom of the cover. There's also a retainer made of metal that clips onto the top of the cover to hold it in the right position. It is possible to pull off the cover to take out the tabs on the bottom.
The tabs can be ripped off by taking off one of the retaining screws and bending the tab outwards a little. If the tab has damaged completely, it can be replaced by a piece of perforated metal strapping that's found at a majority of hardware stores. You'll require U-clips to secure the new "tab" at the bottom. They can be bought from any automotive parts shop.
Once the plastic tabs have been removed and the airbag cover has been pulled back, you will be able to access the hole for the ignition cylinder. Using the 1/16-inch allen wrench to open the ignition lock and push it onto the pin that holds the cylinder. You can then remove the cylinder. You may have to replace it with an anti-theft cylinder.
Take off the Ignition Cylinder
Although a majority of automobiles are now equipped with push-to-start technology, there are some cars on the market that require an ignition lock. This mechanical cylinder is located inside the electrically-powered part referred to as the "ignition switch" that locks the ignition and "reads the anti-theft code within the car key before allowing it to start.
It could be the right time to contact an auto locksmith if the vehicle has signs of a damaged lock cylinder. A damaged ignition lock cylinder can cause numerous issues, such as the absence of power from the engine, and difficulty inserting or removing the keys. Keys that are damaged by wear can cause damage to wafer tumblers, which allow the ignition cylinder to turn. This can cause an obstruction and stops the vehicle from getting started.
Based on the make and model of your car The ignition cover can be secured by either a screw or clip. With a screwdriver, loosen the screw and then slide off the cover to expose the ignition lock cylinder. This is usually a metal cylinder about the size a quarter.
To take the cylinder off, you must drill the pin that holds it. Use a drill bit slightly larger than the slot for the key and then drill straight into it until the cylinder is broken. Then, you can remove the cylinder and then replace it.

The switch is the electrical portion that sends power to the vehicle while the cylinder is the mechanical tumbler your key slides into. Generally, you can discern that the cylinder for ignition is not working properly due to its inability to turn your key.

Depending on your vehicle's make, there may be a bolt or screw that secures the switch, and removing this will expose the cylinder that controls the ignition. It's important to consult the manual for your vehicle before attempting this at home, since it can be hazardous and cause damage to the steering column as well as the plastic covers. The switch is also bundled with the airbag wiring. If you mess with it, it could cause serious injuries.
To remove the ignition cylinder you'll need drills to loosen it. You can also use pliers separate it from the rest of the assembly however, this is typically more difficult than using a screwdriver. If the ignition cylinder becomes loose, you can replace it with a brand new one from your local auto store.
After installing the new ignition cylinder you'll need to reconnect all of the wires to the electrical connection inside the steering column and test it for proper function. It's usually easiest to disconnect the battery first, then remove the ignition key and then start the engine. When the ignition is functioning it's time to reconnect the battery and test it again. If it still won't start then you'll need to have the immobilizer system reset by a dealership or service technician. This is a complicated procedure that should be handled by an expert.

You can also try pushing in on the cylinder with your key while turning it to the ACC or accessory position to try and get it out.
