When it comes to protecting various systems and devices in a non-wired network of a smart city setting, scope creep is the term used to describe the progressive expansion of the security perimeter beyond its initial bounds, frequently as a result of the incorporation of new technologies or the appearance of unexpected vulnerabilities. As they work to keep strong defences against constantly developing threats, I will have a difficult problem as a result of this phenomenon.
In the scenario, Scope creep makes it harder to secure the interconnected systems in the event that attackers use AI technology to target a smart city. For instance, when the smart city grows its AI-driven projects to incorporate more gadgets like IoT sensors, smart appliances, and driverless cars, every gadget becomes a possible point of entry for hackers to take advantage of exploit. It will be challenging to implement a single security standard for the whole ecosystem because multiple manufacturers, operating systems, and security protocols may be used by these devices.
Furthermore, because AI algorithms may interact in unexpected ways and provide new ways to attack, the integration of AI into multiple systems adds new layers of complexity. For example, hackers can manipulate traffic signal AI algorithms to cause chaos on the streets and, at the same time, mess with security camera feeds to avoid detection. Therefore, protecting the wide range of AI-enabled systems and devices in a smart city setting requires an in-depth plan that anticipates and handles scope creep.
