The next day, Anne and the rest of the Avonlea students went to Queen's Academy. "I wonder if I will make new friends," Anne thought. Of course, I promised Diana that no Queen's girl would ever be as dear to me as she is, but I can still make friends. Oh, it is so lonely here!" It was lonelier still when Anne found herself alone in her little bedroom that night. It was a boarding house in town with a hard and cold street, instead of trees, outside. She wanted to cry. Anne decided to try hard to win the Avery scholarship, given to the person with the highest grade in English and English Literature. "Gilbert," she said, "I want to thank you for giving up the school for me. It was very good of you." Gilbert took her hand. "I was pleased to be able to help you. Are we going to be friends after this? Have you really forgiven me?" Anne laughed. "I forgave you that day by the pond, although I didn't know it. I've been sorry ever since." We were born to be good friends, Anne," said Gilbert happily. "I know we can help each other in many ways. Come, I'm going to walk home with you."
