How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are certain indicators that tell you your double-glazed windows must be fixed. Evidently, water ingress or draughts leaking through the frames are an obvious sign of damage to the window and must be repaired as soon as is possible.
Misting may also indicate that your window seals are damaged and in need of replacement. Replacing your window seals will solve the issue, and prevent leaks, draughts, or condensation.
Broken Panes
One of the most frequent problems with double-glazed windows is broken glass. Double-pane windows are more difficult to break than single panes, however accidents can happen. You will want to repair a broken glass as soon as possible.
Take out any glass fragments that could be inside the frame. Make sure to wear eye protection and gloves while doing this, since glass can be extremely sharp. Be sure to check the floor for fragments that are not fixed after the shards have been removed. It is also recommended to remove any metal hooks holding the panes together.
After the glass has been removed, you'll have to remove the old glazing compound (small fasteners that hold the glass to the window frame), and replace them with new ones. This can be a lengthy procedure and requires some tools to get the job done. You will require latex glazing putty, pliers, glazing points, pliers, a heatgun and a putty blade.
When you are removing the old glazing compound and points, it's a good idea to start at the top of the sash and begin to work your way down. This will help you avoid getting any of the paint or sash's wood stuck to your tool. If you do end up removing a portion of the sash's wood be sure to employ a chisel or a utility knife instead of a chemical stripper because this could cause damage.
When you're done then sand the wood. Once the wood is smooth then you can seal it using clear or linseed wood sealer. This will protect it from water and further damage.
There are some quick solutions to repair a cracked double pane window. However, these solutions will not repair the damage and should only be used as a temporary solution. Use of silicone caulk will help seal the gap. However it is crucial to use caulk of high-quality and with proper application methods.
Condensation
If you've noticed any moisture or mist between the glass panes of your double glazing, it means that one of your windows is suffering from a failing seal. This could be a major problem as it prevents the gas or air that acts as an insulation from being trapped between two panes.
A double glazing expert can easily fix this issue. To resolve the issue the window repair professional will take out the window sash that is affected and IGU (insulating glass unit) before putting in a new gasket to create a strong and airtight seal to stop condensation from happening again. They will also apply drying agents to aid in drying the area out and stop the condensation from occurring again.
You may also notice mist between glass panes in double-glazed windows when the frame has moved over time. This can cause the seal to break. This can be a major issue because it means your windows won't function properly and will lose energy efficiency.
It is possible to change a double-glazed window's panes but this can be expensive and is usually only required if the window is beyond repair. However, if you've discovered an issue with your double-glazed windows and are still within the warranty period it could be possible to have the issue fixed for free or at least at a lower cost.
Verify the warranty conditions prior to contacting the company to determine whether they can fix the problem without having to replace the entire window. Double glazed windows are generally covered by guarantees of between 10 and 20 years, so you might find they're able to repair the faulty window units rather than replacing them completely. If this is the case, then they'll likely send a specialist out to repair your double-glazed windows and are usually able to do so quickly. This is a much cheaper option than buying and installing brand new double-glazed windows and is also better for the environment!
Broken Locks & Handles
It could be a major problem if your window handle is damaged, or it is difficult to open. You will not be able to use your windows. This also gives burglars an opportunity to break into your house. There are several options to address this issue but the most effective solution is to connect with a uPVC professional. Based on the severity of the issue, they can usually come and repair it for you, or at a minimum, give you a replacement handle.
There are a number of different types of window locks, but the most common is the Maco or Mila lock that is found on the majority of uPVC frames. They lock using bayonet-style rods, which can easily be jammed. The handle's nose is stuck in the popped-out position and it will not return to the wedged locked position. This can be a very frustrating issue, but it can be resolved by following a few easy steps.
To fix the issue to fix the issue, you'll need to first take off the handle, which should be done with the aid of a screwdriver. Once the handle is removed, you'll be able to see the screws that secure the lock to the frame. Once the screws are removed, you may try to grab the bolts using an awl or a pair of pliers. If this doesn't work then you might need to insert the tool into the gap between the frame and window (the gap can differ on the opposite side of the window) and create an "u" shape using your hands to attempt to grasp the bolts.
You can close your window by adjusting the handle to a closed position if you're in a position to release the bolts that shoot. But it won't be able to be able to open again using the handle because the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) will probably be faulty. It is possible to refit the gearbox without the shoot bolts which means that the window can be opened with the handle (and will still be secure) however, you'll have to purchase an entirely new handle and gearbox.
Broken Hinges
It could be necessary to replace or repair your uPVC windows hinges if they aren't functioning smoothly. It could be that the window was opened too vigorously or the hinge snapped. Or, they may have a defect. Luckily, replacing the hinge is simple and quick and doesn't require you to buy a new window - you can simply get the old ones repaired instead.
Remove the hinges. To do this, loosen the screws that hold the frame to the hinges. After the hinges are removed you can replace the boards with plywood that has been cut to the right size. The plywood should be thicker than the original to support the weight when the window is opened and closed. Use wood filler to ensure that the hole left by the old hinge will not leak or loosen.
After double glazing repair -installed hinges and filled the holes, you'll need paint them. Make sure to use a high-quality paint to ensure that it will last as long as possible. Once the paint is dry it is possible to reattach the window and tighten any loose screws.
Regular maintenance is also important for hinges on windows. You can ensure they last longer by cleaning them regularly on the tracks of friction and lubricating the hinge mechanism. You can also apply wood preservatives to shield them against the elements. This will stop rusting and keep them looking great for the longest time you can.
A double-glazed window can help you save money on heating, because it's more energy efficient than windows with a single glazing. However, just like every other part of your home, your windows are susceptible to wear and tear and may need repairing or replacing in time. If you're noticing any of the signs that your double-glazed windows aren't functioning properly, it's worth getting them examined by our experts in Preston.
