Hentai - Erotic Japanese Art
The word hentai is well-known outside Japan as the term for anime and manga pornography. In Japan, however, the term hentai is more generally used to describe any perverse or unusual sexual desire or act. The word is a contraction of the Japanese terms hentai seiyoku sh (, literally “pervert’s mental illness”) and ygen taiyoku (, literally “perversion of the senses”).

Depictions of erotic subjects are found in a variety of media, including paintings, sculptures, comic books, and animated films, as well as video games and novels. Hentai material may depict male-female or heterosexual sex, as well as female and male genitalia. It is sometimes erotic, but can also be humorous or sad, depending on the medium and the subject matter.

Hentai material can be difficult to categorize, as it is a broad category that encompasses many different genres and mediums. In the case of Japanese art, hentai depictions can be seen throughout history, but are often overlooked as being sexy or erotic because they are regarded as being "tasteless."

However, more explicit work began to appear with the Meiji Restoration, and continued to grow in popularity throughout the 20th century. nhentai led to a proliferation of publications focused on hentai seiyoku, with at least 10 journals dedicated to this area of interest established in the 1920s alone. These publications featured erotic works, and also gave sexual advice. They served to establish the idea that hentai was a perverse trait, with examples of hentai behaviors such as shinjuu (love suicide) being mentioned.

As hentai became more prevalent, it spread to other forms of media as well. In particular, hentai anime (or eroanime) and erotic manga came to prominence after the release of Azuma Hideo’s Cybele [ja] in 1979, and Wonderkid’s Lolita Anime [ja] in 1984. Video games, which are known in the West as erogames, were first identified as hentai by Matt Alt, with 1985’s Urotsukidoji featuring the bare-breasted, tentacle-raped Cleopatra considered to be the first.

In terms of censorship, the most common form of censorship for hentai material is the use of blurring dots on video footage and the inclusion of bar-like images on still images to represent the censorship marks. This type of censorship has been employed in Japan since the Meiji Restoration, and has continued to be used as a way to get around the country’s strict laws on obscene content.

In a society that continues to try and suppress natural human sexual desires, hentai works serve as a form of therapy by appealing to those instincts through the visual arts. Whether the viewer is seeking stimulation, romance, power, or even fear, hentai can provide them with a new perspective on the world. And, as long as the viewer is not suffering from a mental illness, hentai can be a positive experience for them. This is why it continues to be popular among a wide range of viewers. Despite the fact that a significant portion of Akiba’s shops specialize in undisguised pornography, hentai is still an incredibly accessible art form to most Japanese.
