In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored highly on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it struggled with extremely thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots we've reviewed despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as other top-of-the-line models. It still has a lot of features that we'd expect to see in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration you'll find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start running right away. After removing the yellow bin insert and pull tab from the undercarriage, it is simply connected to a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to docking station when it has run out of batteries or is full of sand.
