How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are some telltale signs your double-glazed windows need to be fixed. Obviously, water ingress or draughts through the frames are an obvious indication of damage to your windows and should be repaired in the shortest time possible.
Misting may also indicate that your window seals are in need of replacement. Replacing the seals will solve the issue and stop condensation, draughts, or leaks.
Broken Panes
Broken glass is among the most frequent problems that double-glazed windows confront. While double pane windows are less likely to break than single pane windows however, accidents can occur and you'll want to repair a damaged window as soon as you can.
The first step is to take out any loose shards of glass that are still in the frame. Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves while doing this, as glass can be very sharp. Check the floor for any fragments that have fallen off after the shards are gone. It is also a good idea for you to pull out any metal hooks holding the panes together.
Once the glass is removed, you will have to take off the old glazing compound (small fasteners which pin the glass to the window frame), and replace them with new ones. It is a long process that requires some tools. These include latex glazing putty; metallic glazing points; pliers; heat gun and a putty knife.
It's best to begin at the top and work your way downwards in removing the old points and glazing compound. This will prevent any wood or paint that is removed that is left in the sash from sticking to your tool. If you have to remove some of the wood from the sash, employ an utility knife or chisel instead of chemical strippers, which could cause damage.
Finally, when you're finished, be sure to sand any bare wood to smooth it. Once it's smooth, you can apply Linseed oil or a clear wood sealer to protect it from water and future damage.
You can make a few quick fixes to fix a cracked double pane window. But these fixes will not repair the damage and should be used as a temporary solution. The use of silicone caulk can help seal the gap. However, it is important to use caulk of high-quality and with the correct application techniques.
Condensation
If you've noticed any moisture or mist between the glass panes of your double glazing , it means that one of your windows has a broken seal. This could be a cause for concern because it prevents the gas or air that is used to insulate from being trapped between the two panes of glass which means it cannot do its job properly and this can lead to temperature changes that result in condensation forming.
Fortunately, this can be easily repaired by a double glazing expert. To correct the issue the window repair professional will take out the affected window sash and IGU (insulating glass unit) before putting in a new gasket to make a strong and airtight seal to prevent condensation from occurring again. They'll also use a special drying agent to help dry out the area and stop the condensation from happening again.
The other reason why you might notice a misty appearance between the glass panes of a double-glazed window is that the frame has moved over time, which causes cracks in the crucial seal. This can be a huge problem, as windows that are not functioning correctly and lose their energy efficiency.
Although it is possible to replace the panes of a double-glazed Windows, this can be very expensive and is usually only needed if there are severe issues with the window that is beyond repair. If you're experiencing problems with your double-glazed window but are still in the warranty period, you may be able to repair it for free or at an affordable cost.
Check your warranty terms before making contact with the company to determine if they can resolve the problem without having to replace the entire window. Double glazed windows are typically covered by warranties of between 10 to 20 years, which means you might find that they are able to repair defective window units instead of replacing them completely. If this is the case you're in, they'll send a professional to fix your double-glazed windows. They usually can do this quickly. This is a less expensive alternative to buying and installing brand new double glazed windows, and it's better for the environment!
Broken Locks & Handles
If the handle on your window is broken or hard to open, it can be a major issue since it makes it impossible to use your windows. It can also give burglars the chance to break into your house. There are several solutions to address the issue however the most effective method is to speak with a uPVC expert. They can repair the problem for you, or give you a replacement handle.
There are a few different kinds of window locks but the most common one is the Maco or Mila locks that are found on most uPVC frames. These locks utilize bayonet-style rods for locking and are very easy to seize up. The handle's nose is stuck in the popped-out position, and it won't return to the wedged locked position. This can be a very annoying problem, but it can be fixed by following a few easy steps.
To resolve the issue, you'll need to take off the handle. This can be done easily enough using a screwdriver. After removing the handle, you'll be able to see the screws that hold the lock to frame. After the screws have been removed, you can attempt to grab the bolts with an awl or a pair of pliers. If this fails, you can insert the tool between the frame and the window (the gap may be different at each end of the windows) and create an "u" shape with your hands to grasp the bolts.
You can close your window by moving the handle to the closed position if you are in a position to release the bolts for shooting. The gearbox (espag or espagnolette.) is most likely damaged and won't open with the handle. You can refit the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) without the shoot bolts so that the window can be opened by the handle.
Broken Hinges
It could be necessary to replace or repair your uPVC windows hinges if they are not operating properly. It could be that the window was opened too vigorously or the hinge snapped. Or, they may have a flaw. It's simple to replace the hinge, so you don't need to purchase new windows.
Take off the hinges. This is done by unscrewing the screws that secure the hinges to the frame. Once you've removed the hinges, you can replace them with plywood boards cut to the right dimensions. The plywood should be more dense than the original one to be able to withstand the weight of the window when it is closed and opened. You'll also want to fill the hole with wood to ensure that the hole that was left by the hinge is filled to the brim and will not leak or break in the future.
After you've filled holes and replaced the hinges, you will need to paint the doors. Use a quality paint to ensure it lasts as long as is possible. After the paint has dried it is possible to attach the window again. Tighten any loose screws.
Window hinges also require regular maintenance. You can ensure they last longer by regularly cleaning the tracks of friction and lubricating the hinge mechanism. You can also apply wood preservatives to shield them against the elements. This will help prevent corrosion and ensure they look great for as long as you possibly can.
A double-glazed window can help you save money on heating costs, since it is more energy efficient than windows with only one glass. However, like any other part of your home, your windows will show wear and tear and might require repair or replacement in time. Our Preston experts can help you if there are signs that your double-glazed windows are not working correctly.
