What to Look For in a Good Robot Vacuum
A good robotic vacuum can help you stay on top of pet hair, lint, and dust on a daily basis. Many robot vacuums work with applications that let you schedule cleaning sessions. You can also set virtual boundaries, or walls, to keep the vacuum away from areas you don't wish to be cleaned.
This smart vac and mop creates a home map after its first trip, and then it will remember your space for future jobs. It has an extra-large dustbin that automatically empties and self-cleaning, self-cleaning brush roll.
Object Detection
When picking a robot vacuum, look for one that can take in big items, such as lamps and toys as well as fine dirt. This will ensure that they don't get snarled by the roller brush and aren't left behind on your floors. This feature is especially important if your robot will be cleaned frequently by pets or children.
It's recommended to select a model that has a powerful motor and lots of suction power. This will make it more efficient in removing pet hair, lint and dust off your carpets and hardwood floors.
The size of your home is another crucial factor to consider. If robot vacuum deals have a huge house, you may want to opt for one with multiple cleaning zones that can clean the entire home in one session. Certain models have mopping features that can be used to keep floors looking clean and fresh.
Robot vacuums are long-lasting, but they need to be maintained and cleaned regularly. Cleaning the rotating brushes and emptying the dust container and wiping down the sensors regularly will keep your machine functioning efficiently for many the years to be. Many of the owners of robot vacuums who we talk to have owned their machines for ten years or more (and have replaced motors, brushes, and batteries as time went by).
A basic robot will cost less than a full-sized vacuum cleaner, however they'll still do an excellent job of keeping up with dirt and pet hair and lint. You can use them to clean your floors several times per day. The downside is they don't have as technological innovation, and may be prone to getting stuck or needing human intervention.
Object Avoidance
The best robot vacuums use cameras, sensors or lasers to navigate your home and avoid getting stuck or falling on the stairs. Certain models are able to return to their dock or base when the battery is low. They can also avoid obstacles such as furniture cords and legs. Some of the most expensive models come with mapping capabilities, which allow them to remember your home's layout and spend less time bouncing against walls.
If you don't want splurge on the most advanced robotic vacuums, you can locate a model that does a great job of removing pet hair, dirt, dust and dust from floors made of tile and wood as well as carpets with a low pile. They also do a good job of handling larger debris like metal screws and staples that are rusty or even abandoned toys. Some come with an auto-emptying base which is helpful in the event that you don't wish to empty your trash bin after every cleaning session.
Some robotic vacuums have clever features that make the standard stick vacuum look old-fashioned. They include scheduling, zone-targeting and the ability for you to control them using an app or a voice assistant, like Alexa. You can also create cleaning zones and virtual walls to block off areas you do not want the robots to enter.
Some robotic vacs such as the Eufy 11S and my former top pick the Roborock S8, have obstacle avoidance technology that stops them from crashing into furniture or getting caught in cords. Some robot vacuums, such as the iRobot Roomba j7+ have more advanced AI obstacle-avoidance technology which uses a camera, processors and smarts to avoid items like lamp cords as well as pet waste. It's a bit more expensive than the other bots I've tested however, it did a fantastic job of avoiding obstacles in my home and rarely got stuck or tangled when I was working on my floors.
While the iRobot's j7+ was a good obstacle avoidance tool however, it wasn't always doing an excellent job of removing dirt and crumbs from my carpets. It also tends to over-vacuum areas, which resulted in an abundance of dust in the filter, and a less-clean house.
Smart Mapping
Some of the best robot vacuums come with an app that helps you customize cleaning modes set schedules, and view an outline of the area of floor that the machine covers. This is a useful feature that a few competitors do not have. This makes it easy to create profiles that will automatically start your robot at specified times and keep it running on a regular basis, like cleaning the living room before dinner or every other day.
A good app can also allow you to control your robot via voice commands. Some models support Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start cleaning" or "change cleaning mode" without the need for an app.
Find the model with a large dust bin. This will allow you to perform many cleaning sessions without having empty it. There are also models that self-empty which takes a portion of the burden of emptying the machine after each cleaning run.
If you're looking for a machine that is more than simply vacuum, you'll need to consider one that can mop your floors. These are typically larger than the robotic vacuums, and come with a water tank inside that holds many cleaning sessions of dirt and debris before needing to be cleaned.
The most advanced robots create their own maps of your home and can even remember the layout between cleanings which can help them avoid getting lost or stuck in corners. This can make a significant difference in the efficiency of your robot vacuum, because it won't need to return to where it started when it encounters walls or furniture.
Our testers found that robots that had this feature were extremely efficient. They could watch TV or complete other things while the robot cleaned. Some of these models utilize laser navigation and can make an exact map of your entire home, meaning you can program them to clean only the bedroom after dinner, or each room of the house while you're working.
App Control
It is best to select one that comes with an app that is mobile for those who want to modify the frequency of cleaning and select cleaning mode. Within the app, you can also check the status of your vacuum and its dust bin. Some of the most effective robot vacuums can be controlled via voice with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts.
A robot that has a self-emptying bin and washable filters makes it easy to keep clean, especially when you are able to easily access the filter and remove it to rinse it. A powerful brush is another excellent feature that can reach into corners and along baseboards for removal of dirt and hair. Some robots are more adept at avoiding chair leg than others. Some have a sensor that automatically cleans brushes to avoid obstruction.
Some robo-vacs use navigation tools that help them discover your home and get around obstacles. The most expensive models employ sensors and cameras to identify obstacles like stairs, furniture, and cords. The cheaper models could utilize boundary strips to mark areas where you don't want it to enter. Avoidance of objects can be particularly useful for families with young kids who scatter socks and toys all over the house. This helps your robot to gather these items instead of scattering.
We're seeing more robots with mops, which are great for people who have hard floors and require to clean them regularly. They have a water reservoir built into their chassis or as a separate piece that you can swap in when ready to mop. They might need to be filled more frequently than other kinds of robots, however they're ideal for homes with floors made of wood that can't be easily cleaned using a vacuum.
We've seen some amazing technology in these small robots and they're less expensive than you might imagine. In fact, you can find a good one for under $200 that does a decent job of cleaning pet hair and crumbs from hard floors, and also traversing the edges of lightweight carpets or area rugs. The robot can be programmed to clean a particular room on a regular schedule. It can be controlled remotely through an app or by pressing buttons.
