La historia del Monte Rushmore empieza en 1923, cuando el historiador estatal de Dakota del Sur, Jonah LeRoy "Doane" Robinson, pensó que valdría la pena erigir un gigantesco monumento para estimular atractivo turístico de la región.
Icono U.S.A. En 1927 empezaron en Dakota del Sur las obras de un proyecto colosal. El escultor Gutzon Borglum (y 400 trabajadores) iniciaron el tallado de los bustos de cuatro presidentes de los USA: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt y Abraham Lincoln
El Monte Rushmore es un símbolo de libertad y democracia y un lugar especial para todos los pueblos y culturas . La mayoría de las visitas tienen como objetivo ver la montaña tallada y las instalaciones para visitantes asociadas.
