It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to reality when it starts to drift away from its original location.


iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which do not have bristles, and thus tend to resist tangles better than earlier models. They are also taller and can fit under beds or couches that are low. They're specifically designed to make this model more movable on various flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models with a higher-end price tag however, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to identify tiny bits of dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous model, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It was successful in collecting pet hair, but struggled with thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots we've reviewed despite the minor drawbacks. top robot vacuum 's also not as expensive as other top-of-the-line models. It has many of the features we would expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps or smart home integration that you'll get from other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is available for use as soon as you are ready to. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you have to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its big "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will automatically return to docking station when it runs out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicators on top that indicate when its bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or when it loses Wi-Fi.
