Unlock Your Car With Shoelaces
Many vehicles are now equipped with advanced security features. Older models often include post locks that can be opened using simple techniques.
Some car manufacturers also offer mobile apps that can unlock your car. Check with your automaker if this service is available to you.
1. Shoelaces
If you know how to use them, shoelaces could be a fantastic tool when you are locked out of your vehicle. If your car has an locking tab that moves vertically, typically near the window, you can unlock it with a pair shoelaces.
Then tie a slip knot through the middle of two shoelaces. Join both ends and create a loop 3/4 of the way along the shoelaces. Slide the noose into the crack that exists between the frame of your car and the door. Then, move get my keys out of my car until it is able to connect to the lock mechanism. It may take a bit of trial and error however once the shoelace is secured then simply pull it upwards on both ends to unlock your car.
When using this method, the most important thing to bear in mind is to be careful to not scratch or damage your vehicle. If you are able to successfully apply this method to unlock your car, it could reduce the cost of roadside assistance or a locksmith service and get you back on your way in just a few minutes.
This method is an excellent alternative to more abrasive methods, such as using a hanger, which can scratch your car. However, it might not always work, particularly on more advanced models. If the locking system of your vehicle does not respond, you could need to use an electric screwdriver or a long wooden bar to get it open.
2. Coat Hanger
Locked out of your car is among the most frustrating experiences in our modern lives. Many people may have witnessed their uncle or father use coat hangers to open the door of their car when they were younger However, this method can be risky and may not work for all vehicles. The use of a coat hanger to open a car door can harm the door's frame and in some states it is illegal.
You can unlock your car with an easy wire coathanger by sliding it between the door and the door frame. Slide the hanger into this gap and bend it into the shape of a small "V" shape so that it can get a solid grip on the lock post. Then, pull up on the hanger to loosen the pin or bar that controls the door lock. You may have to move the hook around a few times before you spot something that can move the lock but it shouldn't require a lot of effort to lift the bar.
If you're unable to get the hook of your coat to let go of the control arm, you could try placing it between the window and the weather stripping. It may be necessary to poke around using the hook end of the coat hanger to find this area however once you've located it, you are able to play around with the hanger until you hear your door open. This technique isn't without risk however it can be a great way to gain entry into your vehicle without having to seek professional assistance or a key. If this method doesn't work, you can always call an emergency roadside assistance service or locksmith for more help.
3. Wooden Wedge
You could lose your keys quickly if you erroneously or make a mistake. If you don't have the ability to contact AAA roadside assistance or locksmith services, you'll require an emergency solution to unlock your car.
You can use any tool that can open an opening between your frame and your door. For example you could use a screwdriver, tennis-balls, or a coat hanger. You may have to squirt air into the gap in order to make it wide enough to allow your tool to pass through and reach the lock. Be cautious not to damage your car.
A lot of people will use a pair of pliers or other tools whenever they lock their keys inside their vehicles, but it's best to use tools that won't scratch or scratch the aluminum trim or paint. Inflatable wedges work well for this purpose, and they can be found in various sizes that fit into most doors.
A long strip of plastic folded in half, similar to bags for grocery shopping is a second alternative. Then, slide the strip into the door that was opened and, when it is inside the lock put it on the knob and pull it upward. This method is a bit messy but it's a lot more efficient than the coat hanger or screwdriver, which can be difficult to control.
If you're a more recent model car owner, it's likely that the lock mechanism doesn't have a traditional handle on the exterior of the vehicle but instead is located at the top of the window, near the weather stripping. To unlock a car with this type of lock, you'll need bend the wire hanger tip into a hook. Then, slide it into the gap between the door and window (or weather stripping) until it is at the lever or switch that locks.
4. Air Wedge
Repo and locksmith professionals utilize air wedges like this one made by HPC to create more space around the window frame of the car so that they can access tools easily. They're also an excellent method of avoiding damage to the vehicle when you aren't able to access it using keys.
An air pump wedge works by sliding between the door and the door's weather stripping into an area where the correct pressure is applied. Then, a hand pump is used to inflate the bag so that it separates the car door from the vehicle's window and makes an opening wide enough to accommodate a car unlocking tool. This allows you to unlock a vehicle door without using a key, by breaking the lock mechanism manual.
A good air wedge should have a stiffener to prevent it from collapsing when it's pumped up and an escape valve to stop over-inflation. It will also have a durable, non-marring vinyl bag that is designed to last for many applications. These wedges are best utilized with a long-reach vehicle door unlocking tool or a picker that can be inserted into the wedge.
This method is not recommended to open a car door by an individual. This could cause damage to the vehicle and need costly repairs at a body shop. It is also not a safe method to open your car if you've locked your keys inside.
It is suggested that those who are stuck in their vehicle contact a professional roadside assistance service to get help. They will usually send a skilled, trained technician equipped with the right tools to open a vehicle's door without damaging the vehicle. They can also assist with towing, battery replacement, and other issues.
5. Rod
A rod is a long, thin metal piece, which is usually tapered or cylindrical. It is a support for another object. It can be used in a car to create a gap so that you can access the keys and unlock the doors. It can be difficult to maneuver this method however, it's worth a shot. If you're fortunate, it may work.
If you're not comfortable opening your car yourself you can get someone else to help. You can also hire an auto locksmith. You can find a locksmith near you by searching the internet or phone book. Another option is to sign up for an AAA membership, which comes with roadside assistance. This service will send an individual to your location in a short time and will be able to unlock your vehicle without hassle.
Many modern vehicles come with security features that prevent thieves from breaking into the vehicle without keys. Older models are easier to break into. To unlock these vehicles, use a coat hanger, or a rod. To do this, you must separate the coathanger at the hook and bend the straight end into a hook. The hook should be slipped behind the weather strip and into the slit of the door to create an opening. Then, insert the rod and move it until it is depressed or move the door lock switch.
Certain automakers have smartphone apps to help you unlock your car if you're locked out. BMW and Hyundai for instance offer lockout applications which allow you to unlock your car using a smartphone's screen. OnStar is a program offered by other automakers such as General Motors that can assist you if your car is locked out. You'll need to have an iPhone 11 or newer or Apple Watch Series 5 with the latest version watchOS, and be within Bluetooth range.
