7 Things You'd Never Know About Private ADHD Titration
Private ADHD Titration

There is a current national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and increased global demand.

adhd medication titration is able to offer private ADHD titration as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments cost include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history, and an evaluation using the typical ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your examination, you will be informed whether medication may be beneficial in your particular situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which can be scheduled in person by video link, in person or by telephone). Your doctor will explain the different options available for you to take medication and, if you choose to begin taking medication, we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process may take several weeks and it involves gradually altering your child's medication until the appropriate balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to need to titrate three or four medications before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is important that parents participate in the titration process and keep an eye out for their child's behavior, so they can inform the doctor whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be given as an individual prescription that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to check your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure measurements. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the evaluation has been completed you will be able to book appointment with your psychiatrist, if necessary. Usually the appointment will take place through a video call using zoom but in certain circumstances it may be possible to do an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).

In this session, we'll discuss any treatment options and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration plan. This will include a review of your medication dose and an examination of any negative side effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration appointments is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for online or phone video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any charges for medication.

The doctor will also ask you about your family background and the impact your ADHD symptoms impact your life, including any relationship issues you might be experiencing or other mental health issues you may be experiencing. ADHD can be a hereditary condition, and it's vital to assess your family history to determine if you are at chance of developing this condition.

During this examination, it is crucial that you are honest and open with the doctor, as they will be using the information you provide to determine if you have the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step in the process, as failing to do so could result in an inaccurate diagnosis, and thus an incorrect prescribing of medication.

If you decide to seek treatment for ADHD, we'll arrange an appointment to follow-up with a psychiatrist who is specialized in this field. If you'd like to start treatment immediately it is possible to start treatment immediately following the diagnosis. Or you can wait two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

If you're not sure which one you prefer, we suggest that you talk to your GP prior to booking your private appointment as certain providers have different policies about whether they require the submission of a GP referral letter or not. We also suggest to check if your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement', which means that once you are discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for medication.

Medication

Medication is an integral element of the process for many people who are looking for a private ADHD diagnosis. Getting prescriptions from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and long-winded. NHS waiting lists can be extremely long and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

Asking your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry UK and ADHD 360). You can choose a service that provides an assessment that is private and titration. This will help you save time and be more convenient, especially when you are on a tight work schedule.

If you are diagnosed, your doctor will examine you to determine if need medication titration. You will be asked to fill in forms that are different for each provider, but the most important ones are self-report forms and medical histories from childhood to adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor to determine if there are circumstances that indicate you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication, even when they've been prescribed.

If you are titrated on medication, this will usually consist of non-stimulant and stimulant medications. They will be carefully tested and monitored to find the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The process of titration can be long and could require several additional appointments before you are stable on your dosage.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and amount of medication you are taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. The appointment will involve your doctor checking to see if you are on the right medication, noting any adverse effects you've experienced and making any adjustments needed to ensure you are on a safe dosage. You'll also be required to attend a routine health check, which could include blood pressure and pulse readings, as well as weight and weight measurements as well as an annual review.

For some individuals it could be because they are happy with their medication and don't require a further discussion about their titration. If you're looking to discuss your titration or treatment plan in more detail, it is possible that you will be referred back to the private doctor who performed your initial assessment. If this happens, the titration appointment will be included in the consultation fees and they will receive their medication through private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than an NHS prescription as the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
