Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money
Window repairs can save time and money for homeowners. However, there are instances when replacing old windows is more economical.
Cracks or holes in windows' glass are often caused by stray baseballs and projectiles. With the right tools, these are easy fixes.
If the frame of the window is beginning to decay, it's best to replace the entire unit.
Broken or Cracked Glass
A storm that is severe or the sand from your lawnmowers, or the vase you place down too hard could crack the glass of your windows. Fortunately with a little effort and effort can stop these cracks from becoming worse and save you the expense of replacing glass.
First, take out the broken glass. Wearing gloves carefully pry off any molding, trim or glazing putty holding the glass in place. You may also have to use a utility knife in order to loosen any stubborn glass shards stuck in the frame or old glazing.
After removing the window clean the area around it and the surface thoroughly. This will stop the glue that is used to glue the new glass from leakage and causing further damage. Also, you should make sure that the glass you're replacing is a good fit. If the new glass is bigger than the previous one, you'll need cut it down with a circular saw or miter saw.
Once your surface is clean, search for a glass adhesive that's specifically made for windows and follow the directions on how to apply it. Then, you can reinstall the glass into the window sash. Avoid flexing the glass or moving it during this step. This can cause cracks to become deeper.
Finally, you can use a product such as Loctite Super Glue Glass to fill the crack and seal it. It's designed to work with all types of glass, including tinted windows. Just be aware that this type of fix won't completely cover the crack, so it's not a good choice for windows that are easily visible from the outside.
Another option is epoxy, which is a little more time-consuming to apply but will provide the strongest seal, and can make the cracked window virtually unnoticeable. Before applying epoxy, however you'll need to wash your glass and the surrounding area thoroughly. You will also need to be prepared for any sudden weather changes which could cause the cracks to grow. If you're not confident of these DIY methods, or if your cracked glass is large or a two-paned, it's recommended to contact a professional.
Sashes That Won't Open
A window that won't remain up is more than simply a nuisance. It could be a risk. Single-hung and double-hung windows are equipped with balancing mechanisms to keep the sash from sliding. However one or more of these mechanisms could become disconnected or damaged. Inspect the balance bar and pivot shoe to determine if one or both have become dislodged. If they have, you will have to replace them in order for the sash to remain in place.
Moisture can trigger cycles of expansion and contraction within the frames of sash windows made of timber. In time, this may weaken the joints of the frame and cause them to sag. It is possible to repair this without taking down the window by putting a knife around the frame's joints and then prying them open. If your wood appears to be swollen, it's typically due to the absence of flashing on the exterior of your house which allows water to enter the frame.
A snapped sash cable is another common cause of windows not opening. It is possible to reconnect the cord using pliers and by slipping the sash back into its normal position. If the cord is damaged, you'll have to replace it.
Paint can also make a window difficult to move. If the sash channel of double-hung windows is sealed with paint, you might be able to break the bond using the help of a utility knife and slide it. If this does not work then you'll need to take out the window sash and then cut the seam on both sides between the sash, stop, the parting strip or jamb (Photo 1).
The sash shoes that are used in single-hung windows are constructed of either metal or plastic. These shoes have a U shape slot that is locked when the shoe is in its normal position in the sash. To unlock the shoe using a screwdriver and turn the slot to the side using the image 2. Then you can slide the sash up and down again and see whether the window is functioning normally.
Rotting Wood
Wood rot isn't just unsightly, it poses a real danger to the structural integrity of the portion of the home it's infiltrating. The fungus responsible feeds on moisture and transforms wood beams, walls, and joists into a soggy and spongy mush. The best way to stop rot is to make sure your home is maintained and areas that have exposure to the elements are protected. Even if you're vigilant, it only takes one mishap with the painting process or clogged gutter or minor roof leak to expose window frames, porch columns and other areas of your home to a myriad of decaying organisms that can quickly destroy the structure and weaken its stability.
The majority of wood decays due to excessive moisture, which is usually caused by rainwater seepage or condensation. The latter can happen when damp proofing courses aren't installed or is damaged or damaged, or when internal materials such as plaster and drywall are affected by leaky pipes, appliances or fixtures.
The first step to repair the rot is to take off the old material. It is usually easy to do this using a pry-bar, but a combination hammer and chisel may be needed for the most difficult spots. After the rotten pieces of wood are removed, the hole must be filled in and sealed. There are a variety of wood fillers available and the best one will depend on the amount of work you wish to do, how deep the hole is and how much of the original frame can be preserved.
If the rot has spread out too far for a filler to perform, you will need to replace the damaged part. This can be done either by hiring a professional, or doing it yourself. This is a more complex project, however, and requires expert carpentry skills to get the job done properly. If you're unsure about your ability to do this yourself, then it's best to call in a professional.
While repairing rotting wood is always a possibility but it's much easier (and cheaper) to stop it from happening in the beginning. The best preventative measures are sealing any cracks that are around windows, scraping the caulk off and repainting it, as well as installing drip edges on the roof. You should also look for signs of excess humidity around your windows, and think about a dehumidifier in order to keep the levels of moisture in check.
Dirty Seals
Water dripping from or around a window is probably the most obvious indication that the seals of windows are shrinking. Sometimes this is easy to spot but most of the time it's hidden within a wall and is harder to locate. This can lead to soft wood, mould and even structural damage to your RV. The best way to safeguard your windows is to perform regular inspection and cleaning. You can identify small smudges by gently pressing on the seal trim while visually checking.
Windows that have a haze of fog are a sign of a failing seal. Although they may not cause structural damage or increase your power bill, they can take away from the appearance of your RV.
The weather plays a significant role in the failure of window seals. In hot temperatures, seals expand, whereas in colder temperatures they contract. This issue can be cured by storing your camper under cover and keeping it away from direct sunlight. upvc repair will assist in preventing the salt from causing damage to the seals of your window.
Other factors that contribute to window seal failure are scratching the seals with brushes or washcloths that contain cleaning chemicals which break down the rubber. This can make the seals weak and susceptible to cracking. The best way to prevent this is to avoid using harsh window cleaners and to keep the sash tracks and window seals clean with a dry brush.
Conducting these regular maintenance tasks is the most affordable and efficient way to protect your RV's windows. It also gives you the chance to examine the condition of your window seals and make repairs that can prevent costly future problems.
It's more expensive to have your window seals lubricated or replaced with 303 Protectant spray, however it's less expensive than repairing water damage caused by failed sealing. If you're willing to commit a few hours of work and time, then this is an easy DIY project that will prolong the life of your RV's windows, and save you money in the end.
